Exciting times!
It's two months since the launch of this year's 30% Club UK and Moving Ahead mentoring programme and I'm absolutely astonished by the people that make this happen. I'm incredibly lucky to be mentored by Sonia Zhang who has blown my mind! I feel like a whole new world has opened up and it's still early days into our mentoring relationship. Huge credit also goes to my EA mentor and the 30% club ambassadors in the Environment Agency who have really supported our cohort and been fantastic guides. I'm really excited to see where the next 6 months goes. Some things I have learned so far: 1. The more you speak up, the more people understand you (a safe space is key) 2. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it - seems obvious but I think we struggle with this, particularly women. 3. Surround yourself with supportive people - family, the critical friend, the boss that believes in you, the great colleagues and a workplace that encourages personal growth. 4. Don't let a lack of knowledge hold you back from the next step/s in your career- Empower yourself by reading, doing courses and immersing yourself in the subject. This sounds obvious, but when you've worked in a specific field for over 20 years, it can be daunting to branch out into the unknown. So read and learn to improve your confidence. 5. Volunteer for as many different learning opportunities as you can to broaden the scope of your knowledge. 6. When doing any job/task ask yourself; does it add value, does it challenge me, does it help me grow. If not, find something else that does!! 7. My development is MY responsibility! Take ownership to seek opportunities, reach out to people who can guide you and support you, and let people know what you want to do and where you want to go! 8. Network, Network Network - I haven't valued the power of networking until now, in fact I've actively avoided it! From now on, I'll be talking to lots of people in a variety of roles, and finding out what they do. And finally don't give up - rise to the challenge and keep the momentum and positive energy going 💪😁👏

Review of November. It can be so useful to look back on the previous month before whizzing off into the next one. November was genuinely one of my best this year! ✅ I delivered 10 days training this month, with 2 scheduled in for December (but that's fine, December is always quiet) ✅ Revenue is up very slightly on this time last year ✅ I went to - Edinburgh, Enfield, Heathrow, Crawley, London, Singapore and Peterborough, with one day of on-line training. ✅ Launched a LinkedIn Local for Cheshunt and Broxbourne - we had 21 people at the beautiful new Theobalds Enterprise Centre - a huge thank you to Zoe Galea for hosting us so enthusiastically. ✅ Some fabulous networking at BNI - I am education co-ordinator, which means I get to deliver a mini training session most weeks. ✅ Genuinely the highlight has to be going to Singapore - the client is terrific, the course is a huge success and how lucky am I to be paid to go away and deliver training internationally? So grateful. ❌ Struggling slightly with LinkedIn's push to monetise everything - at one point this week every other post was promoted. It seems to have settled down a bit now, so let's hope they find a balance. ✅ I took my son and daughter out to London for the day. We went shopping in Oxford Street, had a meal in Chinatown, saw a show and finished off with a wander around Trafalgar Square. These two young people are glorious and I am so proud to spend time with them. ✅ Oh yes!!! The website is live. I have put a link in the comments. My last post alluded to a trip to Sydney for an extraordinary opportunity - here's the update. I am proud to share that I was a finalist for an amazing fellowship - one of eight finalists from around Australia - through a lengthy, demanding application process. It pushed me far out of my comfort zone to seek the support needed for my application and preparations for the selection panel. As a direct result of that generosity and expertise of others, and more hours of practice than I might admit to, those preparations were rewarded with some of the best feedback anyone could hope for. And I… didn't get the fellowship. (Insert colourful language!) So, now the hard work begins again. How do I understand the process I went through, my reactions, and the feedback on a micro- and macro-level? How do I use this information to build my research and my career through choices that prioritise impact? Setbacks are rich learning experiences because they are full of information about how others perceive what we do and who we are through the ways we have communicated, for better or for worse. One of my learnings so far is the sense that I can compete on a much bigger stage than I've ever been on, and that my research can be valued by others far outside my fields. Another learning has been about the value of social media in engaging with others professionally, which has been more powerful than I would have ever expected. Yet another has been the benefits of pushing myself out of my comfort zone. One of the ways I’m going to put this setback to work is through starting a habit of social media engagement to build my networks, knowledge, and communication skills. To start, I’ll be sharing some of the other lessons I learned from this experience in case they help others, and seeking feedback to keep me growing. This is outside of my comfort zone, as being vulnerable like this publicly is not easy for me, but I can’t see any other way. My 2024 is going to be a great year of growth, strategy, and reflective, intentional practices. What have you learned from your setbacks this year? And what’s your 2024 going to be?
