#ListeningSession 6 - GCF’s President and CEO, Matthew Randazzo and Chief Impact Officer, Rasheda Malcolm-Cromwell hosted an open forum with organizations in the arts and culture sector that enrich our region through creative endeavors, employment and arts education. During the conversation, attendees expressed a clear need for more funding and support for staffing and operations. Additional takeaways include a desire for more artists to be at the decision-making table, better access to boardrooms and private sector spaces, and greater recognition of the positive effects the arts have on our regional economy. How do you think we can best serve our region’s artists and cultural institutions? What opportunities do the arts bring to the region and how can we ensure these opportunities persist?

My answer to the second question in the slide below actually sparked a great convo earlier with my colleague Tamar Keenan about how outdated the term "career ladder" is. It makes careers seem so rigid and pre-determined. We don't have to always climb up to progress. It leaves unrealistic expectations and narrows what growth actually means. What should we be saying instead of "career ladder"? Perhaps, we should be calling it "career maps" instead, since there are many different career destinations to consider and pathways to reaching them that are equally as satisfying. This also includes taking the rocket ship up to space (senior management/c-level), which is certainly a destination, but not the only way to grow. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Eye-tracking research helps Indianapolis museum steer guests in the right direction "Prominent signage is key when navigating a new space. This is especially true when the majority of a location’s visitors are parents or guardians who are attempting to guide themselves while caring for young children. In partnership with the University of Southern Indiana, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis used eye-tracking to determine how effective their wayfinding signage truly was for first-time guests." We created a wisdom hotline for Citizens like you to share your wisdom on how to live in the 21st century and beyond. We are collecting wisdom now and will be deploying it in the future. Think wisdom time capsule. Call the number below and leave your wisdom for future Seekers to hear.
We had hundreds of people play the Treasure Hunt the first weekend of may. It was great how fast some people solved clues and got to the locations. Sometimes in less than 10 minutes. We also had a blast partnering with MoMa to bring people into the museum for free museum day. It feels good to do good in your community and meet so many interesting people. Next up: a hotline for citizens to give wisdom to one another.

Echoing Lord Ed Vaizey's excellent speech this week One would expect the words 'Arts' and 'Culture' to be at the very heart of policy in the National Planning Policy Framework This is after all the essential text which governs spatial planning in England Yet in over 28,000 words the words 'arts' and 'culture' both appear only once Are we relegated to nipping out the back of the pub, for a sneaky cultural experience? The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities seems to think so As Arts and Culture linger shamefully in their lonely single mention, behind 'factory outlet centres' and 'indoor bowling centres and bingo halls' in a snappy section on 'town centres' in the Glossary. Lucy Frazer QC is this REALLY the best we can do as a Cultural and Arts powerhouse? Department for Culture, Media and Sport is a strong voice for our creative economy, but sometimes one has to wonder if anyone listens to anyone else in Whitehall Our culture and arts are part of the DNA our of national experience and an important way we need to think about the future of our nation. This of course must includes spaces they are to occupy HM Treasury has occasionally spotted the sector as the Chancellor said last year "Our Creative Industry isn’t just about the glitz and glam of the red carpet in Leicester Square. It brings in £108 billion a year to help fund our public services, supports over 2 million jobs, and is world renowned" but sometimes it is difficult to understand that the creative economy is actually one of our 5 key sectors identified for growth. If policy insists in being oblivious to our cultural life, Shakespeare's observation from Richard II might well be prophetic about the future of our national cultural and arts landscape: "Against the envy of less happier lands, this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.... that was wont to conquer others, hath made a shameful conquest of itself" But then again - everyone is a critic. It takes real effort to actually achieve important things...

The UK House of Lords had a debate on the arts - initiated by the incomparable arts broadcaster and novelist Melvyn Bragg. In my speech, I said that arts funding is not insubstantial - but it needs to increase. Government support is very small in the scheme of things, and our flagship institutions need an adequate level of core funding. We also need to see arts as the venture capital of the creative industries - and support our creative industries, not least with planning. Finally it's important to say thank you - to those who work in the arts, and to those who give. As someone in the adjacent archives sector, I am looking forward to today's Museums Association event: All Inclusive: Championing Accessible Museums "Ableism – prioritising the needs of non-disabled people over disabled people – remains pervasive across the museum sector. Disabled people still face barriers in our buildings, policies and structures, and are chronically unrepresented in our workforce and collections. All Inclusive is our annual one-day conference exploring how museums can become anti-ableist in everything that they do. Anti-ableism recognises abled privilege and actively looks to challenge and dismantle it through theory, actions and practices."

Ten years ago today, I joined 9/11 family members, rescue and recovery workers, and survivors, to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today it stands as a permanent reminder of those killed, and the service, bravery, and compassion of those who stood together in unity during those dark hours. The 9/11 Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. Join me in visiting the #911Museum, which will now offer free admission to New Yorkers on the first Monday of each month beginning June 3.
