My thoughts on the AG1 x Starbucks partnership as a marketer in the greens space: From AG1’s perspective, it’s a slam-dunk. AG1 has 2 major problems: 1) the powders are messy and 2) the taste is not great. By partnering with Starbucks, they eliminate both issues and tap into a "habit-based" business (coffee) to promote greens as a new daily routine. It’s a clear win for them. HOWEVER, the Starbucks angle is where it gets interesting… Mixing greens are a pain (and a bottleneck in the Starbucks ops process). The current Starbucks consumers fit into two buckets to me: 1) traditional coffee drinkers and 2) sweet indulgences. AG1 is never going to replace coffee for the traditional coffee drinkers, and they likely won’t buy 2 drinks. Additionally, the AG1 consumer (health nut) is not the same person indulging in a Starbucks flavored latte or Frappuccino. So if the current Starbucks drinker isn't buying this, who is? The current AG1 consumer? Well... the current AG1 consumer is not going to switch from their process of making AG1 to a more indulgent and expensive way of eating their greens at Starbucks. BEST CASE scenario, AG1 drives trial with Starbucks consumers and gets them to convert out of the store; Starbucks sees incremental store traffic from people wanting to try AG1. All this to say… Just eat Grüns and save yourself the headache ;) Delicious, easy, portable, more nutrients, and wayyyy more fun… What do you think of the AG1 x Starbucks partnership? What drives wine retail sales? 🍷🍷 Width of label selection? Coverage of different regions and countries? Hidden gems? Price discounts and deals? Staff behaviour and knowledge levels? Store design and layout? A mix of all of these? The ingredients mix might vary in proportion but the retailers may need a leaf from the hospitality playbook in providing a memorable experience for everyone walking through that door. While sourcing today has become less difficult, thanks to the advancement in logistics and supply chain, understanding the customer's taste profile, the unique occasion that drives somebody to walk into a store and make them feel at home will always win in the long run. A small sale today could mean multiple cases and infinite referrals in the future. I personally prefer to buy from businesses that don't judge me for my lack of knowledge in a certain subject matter and would behave the same if I spent a couple of dollars or when feeling indulgent. The #coffee wars are heating up. As reported in The New York Times excerpted here, cold, sweet and fruity energy elixirs are driving the trend. It’s clear why Starbucks new CEO pay package is pegged at almost $100 million dollars. “Across the country, in cities large and midsize, cafes and drive-ins that specialize in tea and coffee drinks make up one of the fastest-growing segments of the restaurant industry in terms of number of stores. But good luck finding an ordinary cup of joe at most of these new restaurants. There is something of an arms race going on in the coffee world, with a growing number of establishments seemingly desperate to outdo one another in coming up with sweetened, imaginatively flavored concoctions that in some cases bear only a passing acquaintance with what the average customer might consider “coffee.” Instead, most of their sales growth is coming from iced beverages, whether they be syrupy, foamy, cookie-flavored lattes or macchiatos; fruit smoothies; high-octane energy drinks; or souped-up seltzers and sodas. Starbucks, to be blunt, is trying to get its mojo back. Throughout the Covid pandemic, the company had been a big winner, expanding its loyalty programs and drive-through capabilities while serving up 12-ingredient iced beverages for Gen Z’ers who happily posted them on their social media platforms. It's not un-common for a business to take more years than you would hope to establish itself and reach a level of maturity where it can consistently generate cash and become self sufficient. 🛒 Kiernan (Deep Indian Kitchen) - to succeed in conventional grocery, you need to know your data in order to tell a good data story and make sure you can perform, because if you get discontinued, you may not get another shot for years. 👤 marguerite (Momofuku) - don’t force consumer behavior when it comes to finding your brand (DTC vs retail). If they want to buy your product on amazon, they’ll buy it on amazon.
