Education is a major family value for Shannon, mom to four daughters. Their local Boys & Girls Club kept academic success at the forefront for their family. At the Club, Shannon’s daughters found academic programs to keep them on track and college prep support to become the first in their family to attend college. Now, they serve as positive role models for the next generation of Club kids. At Boys & Girls Clubs, one of our top priorities is ensuring all youth have the tools and support to be successful both in life and at school. But we know it takes a lot to make the grade. Academic programming at Boys & Girls Clubs is intentionally designed to complement and reinforce what youth learn during the school day, while creating experiences to spark inspiration and invite curiosity. One of the four components of NCFL's #FamilyLiteracy model, Children’s Education supports the academic growth, social-emotional learning, and physical development of young children. Often, family literacy programs are embedded into existing educational programming offered by early childhood centers, schools, libraries, and community-based organizations to connect the other three components to Children’s Education. Does anyone like being an afterthought? Unfortunately too many schools treat students like afterthoughts. In fact, education and schools are organized more for the convenience of the adults (admin., teachers, etc.). The needs and well being of students are then smushed into that framework however possible. Students pick up on this rather quickly and respond accordingly (disengaged, lack of effort, etc.). Schools that put the needs & interests of students first and build their programming around that foundation have engaged students that embrace teaching & learning built to last. Just saying...#dothinklearn #empowerstudents #microschool #transformschools #regenerativelearning #opensourceeducation

Did you know that research shows play can improve children's abilities to plan, organize, get along with others and regulate emotions? Yes, its true. In addition, play helps with language, math and social skills, and even helps children cope with stress. All of these skills compound upon each other and empower and equip children to learn how to have more confidence and show up in the world at their best. The first rigorous study on the effects of virtual early literacy tutoring is here, and the results are encouraging. After a randomized controlled study, NSSA found that virtual tutoring delivered by OnYourMark Education resulted in higher end-of-year literacy scores for young elementary school students. Specifically, the study found that virtual tutoring resulted in: 📖Significant literacy gains for K-2 students who were not multilingual learners or students with disabilities 🧑🤝🧑One-on-one tutoring generated higher impact than two-on-one 🎒Greater benefit for students further behind at program entry These findings from a virtual tutoring program that uses a similar approach to Reading Partners provide initial evidence that virtual literacy tutoring can be an effective solution to post-pandemic learning recovery. 'How to select a school for my child?' Selecting a preschool or school for our child is one of the 'big decisions' we make. As parents we have many questions like - Which board should I choose for my child? - How to select the right preschool? - What kind of learning does a child <6 years of age need? - Can students from IB/Cambridge take competitive exams? - What is Montessori? What is Waldorf? - Is ICSE better than CBSE? and many more... Over the last three months I spent time researching and summarizing my thoughts on education gained over the last 20 years. I also interviewed founders, principals, and experts representing various boards and recorded their insights. The result is this course on 'How to select a school for my child?' My view is that our children spend 12,000+ hours in school. And if we can spend 2 hours understanding how to select the right preschool/school for our child, it might change our child's life. Take a look!

Let's add this to our must-read list. SEL in service of a broad range of people who historically and systemically have been excluded from opportunities in school, at work, and in society. New Paper Alert! In 'Towards an inclusive social and emotional learning,' we discuss key findings and critical areas for future development in the service of gender-, racially-, ethnically-, linguistically-, and ability-minoritized youth. We begin with outlining what Universal School-Based SEL interventions are and the evidence for them. We next discuss who marginalized and minoritized students are and the evidence of SEL programs effectiveness for them. We then discuss the urgent need for the SEL field to focus on program design, implementation, and research to better determine whether and how marginalized and minoritized students are benefiting from current USB SEL programming. Finally, we provide recommendations for improved research and practice to support a truly inclusive SEL hereafter. Open access here! Michael M. Yale Child Study Center #SEL #Equity #Inclusion
