One of the four components of NCFL's #FamilyLiteracy model, Children’s Education supports the academic growth, social-emotional learning, and physical development of young children. Often, family literacy programs are embedded into existing educational programming offered by early childhood centers, schools, libraries, and community-based organizations to connect the other three components to Children’s Education. There is no one definition of giftedness. IEA advocates for the definition penned in 1991 by the Columbus Group, made up of parents and professionals well-versed in the needs of gifted learners, but there are many other definitions (https://bit.ly/4aJOn7H). While the majority of Americans understand the term "gifted," some individuals may have different opinions (https://lnkd.in/dprm6YE). No matter the term or definition we use, educators, researchers, developmental psychologists, and parents have all agreed that gifted children need more support inside and outside of school. There are more than 3 million gifted students in the United States from all backgrounds, yet advanced programming for these young people in most elementary and middle schools is limited and inconsistent. This is why we founded IEA in 1993: to fill a gap in gifted education. Our goal is to ensure that each gifted child’s specific needs are met so that they can work towards meeting their full intellectual and personal potential. How do you or your child define or experience giftedness? Let us know below! (This is the first in our educational series "Intro to Giftedness" in which we'll share information and resources on giftedness and how to support gifted youth.)

This Webinar is designed for future and current parents of K-12 students who want to learn how to develop an early literacy program for their child or enhance their current learning plan. The Webinar will discuss the importance of early literacy, and how to build these skills to give children the best academic outcome possible. This talk also covers how to help students who are struggling academically. There is a concerning lack of proficiency in the basic reading and writing skills among our students. A knowledge gap has some students lagging behind by one, two, three, or even four grade levels in reading and math. An increasing number of children are repeating grades due to issues such as lack of knowledge and motivation, sporadic attendance, challenges at home, behavioral problems, and learning disabilities. Closing this gap requires taking a hard look at how we are raising our children and deciding what we are willing to change. This webinar will teach you how to close this gap. Sign up today at: http://bit.ly/484R3wU I look forward to meeting with you!

Emotional literacy is the affective part of empathy. Before children can begin regulating their emotions, they need to understand and have a vocabulary for those emotions. This discussion starts with monitoring the Roots of Empathy baby’s feelings and then the children reflect on their own feelings and learn to read the emotional cues of their friends. In our society, we worry about children’s traditional literacy, their math literacy, even their technology literacy. We need to focus more on the foundational literacy – emotional literacy. #RootsofEmpathy #MasterpieceMonday #EmpathyEducation #EmpathyMatters

Does anyone like being an afterthought? Unfortunately too many schools treat students like afterthoughts. In fact, education and schools are organized more for the convenience of the adults (admin., teachers, etc.). The needs and well being of students are then smushed into that framework however possible. Students pick up on this rather quickly and respond accordingly (disengaged, lack of effort, etc.). Schools that put the needs & interests of students first and build their programming around that foundation have engaged students that embrace teaching & learning built to last. Just saying...#dothinklearn #empowerstudents #microschool #transformschools #regenerativelearning #opensourceeducation

📊 Last year, we implemented five major literacy initiatives and, after assessing the effectiveness of our programs, we're ensuring we put our resources toward scalable and sustainable initiatives that will have the greatest impact: Family Reads Program: ✅ Scale As a result of Family Reads’ success, we are not only continuing to support students at Soddy Elementary School but have also scaled the program to Calvin Donaldson, East Lake, and Woodmore Elementary Schools. Literacy First Tutoring Model: ✅ Scale The Literacy First Model's personalized approach and consistent progress monitoring have been key to building students' confidence and literacy skills. The program has now been scaled to 12 elementary schools in Hamilton County and will impact at least 500 children this year. Out-of-School Time K-2 Literacy Toolkit: ✅ Scale The OST K-2 Literacy Toolkit is designed to “right size” literacy supports for afterschool programs. After a successful pilot in the spring with two OST providers, the program is now being scaled to four providers this year. Summer programming is one of the main ways school districts have tried to help students recover academically from COVID-related setbacks. Yet nearly half of districts surveyed are facing summer school budget cuts for 2024. Student achievement gaps persist, and something must be done. One recommendation is to start planning summer programs earlier in the year to find higher quality services that provide teachers with lesson plans, like Footsteps2Brilliance's Summer Climb program. Communicating the need for summer programming with parents is also a must.
