Interesting read. BHP recently offered the option to decrease work hours at its Newman mine to 7-hour shifts with earlier start times. As a result, there has been a 6 per cent uplift in productivity over the past 12 months. Boliden celebrating 💯 Just south of Gällivare is Sweden’s largest open-pit copper mine. It’s probably also the best equal-opportunities workplace. With just over 900 employees, Boliden Aitik is the largest private employer in Gällivare municipality. Most of the employees live nearby, or at least in Norrbotten County. There are also a good many contractors, as there are almost always major projects underway in the mine. Almost 40 percent of the machine operators here are women, as are more than half of the truck drivers. Aitik has evolved rapidly since its early days. Initially, mining was thought to reach 50 meters deep, but today we’re at 550 meters! From 2006 to 2010, a major investment project doubled our production volume. We operate some of the world’s largest machines, and in 2018, we piloted electric trucks, which was a great success. Safety is paramount, and we’ve made significant strides in that area too. As we look to the future, reclamation plans are in place to make the area a natural part of the landscape once again. #Mining #Innovation #Sustainability #BolidenAitik

De Beers' major technology steppingstone Making the transition from an open-pit mine that has been operating successfully for 30 years to an underground operation that could become one of the most mechanised and automated in the world is not something that happens overnight. De Beers Group embarked on the $2.3 billion underground expansion of its Venetia asset in Limpopo Province in 2012, in a move that represented the biggest single investment in South Africa’s diamond mining industry in decades. Underground production began at the mine back in June this year, at a point when construction completion was estimated at 70%. The introduction of autonomous mining systems performing multiple mining processes to deliver up to 6 Mt/y of kimberlite ore – for circa-4 Mct/y of diamonds – is now beginning, with a ramp-up process occurring over the next four years, according to Moses Madondo, Managing Director of De Beers Group Managed Operations. In this wide-ranging interview, Moses highlighted the company's plans to make Venetia Underground one of the most mechanised and automated mines in the world. He touched on autonomous haulage, collision avoidance, cave management, ventilation on demand, and more. BHP Spence celebrates all autonomous fleet Teamwork, greater competitiveness, safety & sustainability of the mine are among important benefits that BHP #Spence in #Chile recently celebrated after achieving full autonomy of the #copper mining operations, having converted its fleet of 33 #miningtrucks and five blasthole #drillingrigs, with zero incidents & managing to reduce exposure to safety risks by up to 90%. Spence celebrated this milestone together with national & local authorities, who were able to learn on the ground how #BHP continues to move towards autonomy, which allows for safer, more efficient operations and brings the company closer to the mining of the future. “This has been a sustainable technological transformation process that today allows our operation to achieve full autonomy, with a fleet of 33 trucks and five drilling rigs, which we managed to implement a month ahead of schedule and with zero incidents. We are talking about an automation process in which people have always been at the centre, with the aim of building a safer, more efficient, diverse and inclusive workplace,” highlighted the President of Pampa Norte, the BHP business unit that includes Spence and Cerro Colorado, Cristian Sandoval Gonzalez. The Undersecretary of Labor, Giorgio Boccardo, highlighted the learning & training program for the company’s workers, a process that has reached 80% of job retraining & 50% female representation. “One of the elements we were hoping to see is how the reconversion plans were carried out, how the new roles were relocated & trained. In that sense, it seemed like a very good experience.” The converted trucks at Spence are 363 t 980E-5 ultraclass models from Komatsu Mining, with the #autonomoushaulage system used being Komatsu’s Frontrunner. The drills are Pit Viper 351 models using Epiroc’s autonomous drilling system. “This type of project has global relevance, given that it uses cutting-edge technologies that ensure operational continuity and, most importantly, the safety of workers, reducing exposure to accidents. Therefore, it is a very important program and not only for Spence, but also for the entire mining sector,” explained the National Deputy Director of the National Geology & Mining Service, Andrés León. In this regard VP of Technology at Minerals Americas, Pedro Hidalgo, commented that this is the beginning of a great challenge to make the mine safer and more competitive every day. “Today we have the mission of getting the best out of this technology. We need to go further & analyse the data that automation gives us, how we can work on it & make better decisions that make our operation more efficient. Komatsu hands over the P&H 4800XPC at Mogalakwena Komatsu South Africa Pty Ltd has announced the official handover of a Komatsu Mining P&H 4800XPC rope shovel to Anglo American, at the #Mogalakwena #platinum mine in #Mokopane, South Africa. This is the largest rope shovel in the world with a 135 ton payload and only the second of its kind, the first one having gone to work at Teck Resources Limited’s #FordingRiver coal mine in Canada. Consisting of 63,770 parts, the shovel took 47,711 man hours to assemble on site (excluding manufacturing). Komatsu says the shovel is the most technologically advanced #ropeshovel ever and is environmentally friendly: with GHG emissions of 90 g of CO2 per for every ton moved, compared to 273 g of CO2 for a diesel power hydraulic excavator, and 136 g for an electric hydraulic excavator. In a post on April 2, Noordman Willie, Senior General Manager at Anglo Platinum said: “Today is a significant day in history for Mogalakwena Mine. We walked our P&H 4800 rope shovel to the pit. It will improve our cost position and bring confidence to our LOAP [life of asset planning]. Thank you to our valued business partners Hlela Mining & Projects and Projects and Komatsu for safe on time delivery of the project. Well done team.” Charl Coetzer, Strategic Account Manager, Mining at Komatsu South Africa told International Mining last year: “The 4800XPC AC leverages new Adaptive Controls technology with optimised machine structures to enable its larger payload and increase efficiencies. #AdaptiveControls is a series of control functions that optimise shovel power usage in different phases of the dig cycle ie crowd, hoist and swing, leading to improved shovel performance while lessening the effect of operating impacts on the machine. Adaptive Controls combined with a stable, optimised structural platform in conjunction with efficient sight lines and refined ergonomics contribute to improved operator effectiveness and reduced operator fatigue. Through the application of innovative engineering and advanced technologies, Komatsu has designed the 4800XPC to be the industry’s most productive electric mining shovel.” The rope shovel, numbered RS 126 at Mogalakwena, is just one example of latest technology being introduced at the mine – it was also the venue for the first #nuGen™ #FCEV truck deployment in 2022 – a Komatsu 930E 290 t truck – which was converted to hybrid #hydrogen #fuelcell and #battery power by First Mode. #theelectricmine #electricmine24 #loadingtools #futureofmining
