Here is your chance to provide feedback on the $144 million library being proposed for Howard County, Maryland. While I really like Dr. Ball and many of the positive changes implemented in Howard County, I am vehemently opposed to spending money on a fancy new library. Howard County needs an additional full-service, level 2 acute care hospital. One hospital is not enough to serve everyone in the urban and rural areas of the County. Furthermore, adding to the existing hospital is a band aid approach to fixing the inadequate number of hospitals available to serve the population in Howard County. If there is almost $150 million available for the County, a hospital in Ellicott City, Clarksville, or another area in Howard County should be considered a higher priority than building a new library. The average wait time to be seen by a physician in Howard County General's emergency room is 18 to 24 hours. There is power in numbers! Today I’ll be 50-60 professionals regionally for the ETSU Ballad Health Strong BRAIN Institute in my Train the Trainer course. These individuals will then be able to facilitate a 3.5 hour Bascis of Trauma, ACEs, Resilence, and Key Principles for Using a Trauma Informed Approach within their own organizations or community. Ten years ago when I helped pioneer community resilence in NE TN and now do this work nationally and internationally, there are three key steps I follow for growing resilence…Advocate, Educate, and Collaborate. In 2020 a toolkit I Co-authored based on this model was recommended by Johns Hopkins Progress in Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action journal as a practical tool for communities to follow.

What a great example of stripping out the unnecessary steps, and focusing on value. All led by the person and what matters to them. As I was listening, I realised that this is how it used to work before New Public Management got in the way! The practitioner would: 1. Have enough time to understand what matters to a person. 2. Decide who the person should see. 3. She that person to the next practitioner. 4. Each practitioner would decide there end then when they should see them next. Listen and understand what matters with the person. No standard assessments Manage risk rather than risk avoidance. Decide the next steps with the person.
