Tomorrow is February 14th and we all know what that means… Yes, it’s Library Lover’s Day! 💖 There are so many ways in which we consume our books. Some of you will prefer to read your books digitally on your favourite device, some of you will listen to the audio version during the daily commute and many of you will still opt for the traditional hardback or paperback. The physical book that you hold in your hands with that satisfying paper rustle during each turn of the page. 📖 Back in 1832, Britain’s first collection of published books became available to the public. These Gothic Horrors priced at a penny per book. However, this was too high a price to pay for most households. To overcome this obstacle, communities of friends joined together to split the cost - and enjoy these dark, gruesome stories together – these were the first book clubs. Today’s book clubs can be found online, in local communities and in our libraries. Our libraries provide an essential service that provides access to all books (and a wealth of other valuable resources). Making them easy to access for everyone so that we can continue to learn from, escape in, and most importantly - enjoy them. We all have a favourite book. Whether it’s the fiction that helps you escape and relax, a business book that propelled your career or a self-development title that helped you overcome obstacles or excel in another area of your life. If you squint at your authorization system and realize it looks a lot like a database, what does that mean? This week on The Business of Open Source I talked to Jimmy Zelinskie about how exactly that happened at AuthZed. And deciding to position as a database had massive downstream effects: -- If we're a database, that means we should follow a database playbook, which is an open source playbook. Thus the company released SpiceDB. -- It made it easy to figure out what the company's business model should look like -- It helped people understand more quickly how they should interact with and think about AuthZed, which ultimately led to more adoption and community growth.
