What Grade Class @ Killeen Elementary did the KISD Superintendent visit? I'm interested from an aspect of KISD school model/structure - Middle School vs. Jr. HS. If the composition was of Grade 5 students, I saw the initial emergence of "maturity" from pubescence to adolescence. Perhaps a key progressive developmental stage that the KISD Middle School adopted model fails to capture? Adopting a Jr. HS model allows one year further maturity development in an elementary environment, rather being thrust into a Middle School environment (Grade 6 -8) where they're "lowest" on the totem pole - following that ordeal; in transition to HS, they're again "lowest" on the totem pole - another unnecessary, inherently disruptive, self-defeating and avoidable KISD structure/model outcome.
In a heartfelt discussion, Killeen ISD Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Fey sat down with a group of fourth and fifth graders from Killeen Elementary, exploring their ideas, concerns, and hopes for their school. These young minds shared a wide range of ideas, from more playtime and favorite foods in the cafeteria to field trips and hands-on learning. When Dr. Fey asked each what they’d do as “superintendent for a day,” the responses were both insightful and bold—like a fifth-grader's brilliant suggestion for food trucks on Fridays! This vibrant exchange showcased the students' passion not only for academics like math and science but also for creating a positive, respectful environment in their classrooms. Listening to students’ thoughts about their school experience is essential to ensuring our educational spaces foster both growth and joy. Dr. Fey’s commitment to elevating student voices reminds us all that education is about creating a foundation that’s both engaging and empowering, preparing these young leaders to reach for the stars. Let’s continue to value student perspectives and make their school days inspiring, impactful, and yes, especially fun! 🎉 #WeAreKISD #StudentVoice #FutureLeaders #KilleenISD #KISDP1

🤔 What does it really take to transform secondary education? After years in curriculum development and classroom teaching, I've learned that isolated initiatives rarely create lasting impact. Earlier this week I spoke with The Educators' Lab co-founder Darcy Bakkegard, whose concept really got me fired up. 🌱 Their organization's four-pillar approach understands something crucial and fundamental: meaningful change requires an ecosystem of mutually reinforcing elements. 🤝 Through their transformative model combining micro-grants, professional development pathways, strategic partnerships, and intentional storytelling, they're creating the conditions for genuine transformation. They recognize that empowering teachers as #changemakers must happen alongside broader systemic change--you can't have one without the other. We need to give teachers the agency and psychological space to take risks, and we need our schools of education to encourage collaboration in the teaching profession. We need to showcase for the public what amazing work our teachers are really doing so that parents and kids (future educators!) recognize the profession's value. And we need to create and maintain strategic connections to sustain change. ⭐ This layered approach is essential. The Educators' Lab is demonstrating that when we simultaneously nurture teacher creativity, build supportive structures, and reshape narratives about education, we create the momentum needed. 🎯 And we improve the lives of the people at the center: kids and teachers. This is exactly the kind of bold, systemic thinking our field needs. Go check them out! #rethinkhighschool #SchoolReform #EducationalLeadership Michelle Blanchet

https://lnkd.in/e_786gbC Our students are not our future. They are our PRESENT, and they are creating the future that we too will live in for a short time. As educators, our impact matters. We can teach them core subjects all day, but we would be silly to think we are preparing them for the world much less to change the world. Culture over strategy will win all day. A culture of values, high expectations, and skills that will allow them to walk into the real world and function. For students to have high expectations, teachers must have high expectations. For teachers to find joy in their calling and achieve they must be presented with high expectations and support. For administrators to have a school of culture they must show a school with a foundation of support and value their teachers. For administrators to be motivated enough to raise the level of expectation, they must have support and expectations of collaboration from their district level. And for districts to thrive for their students, they must not only MODEL agency, but create a sense of AGENCY in their students. It’s a full circle- no one greater than another. And it ALL has foundational significance going back to the universal values that must be anchored in every student. #LevelUP. #maxWELL #iLead #transformationalleadership
