We’re excited to welcome Matt Johnston to the BIGSOUND team in 2024 as a member of our incredibly knowledgeable Programming Advisory Group. Matt is the promotor and curator of regional live music venue and events company, Dashville. He grew up in the bush of Wonnarua country (Hunter Valley), playing in country punk bands, before launching The Gum Ball in 2004, which evolved into Dashville over time. Dashville has gone from strength to strength, hosting a number of boutique camping festivals and annual events including Dashville Skyline, Dashville Nights, PigSty in July, and Thrashville, whilst also providing artist services to a number of recording acts in the local Hunter Valley music scene. Matt is passionate about helping regional acts thrive, which is why we’re honoured to have him with us to help develop BIGSOUND’s energetic 2024 program.

It is easy to question how in the hell the music industry could be based off of oppression when the very concept of art should be an escape from that. But the truth is colonialism permeates every facet of monetizing this lifestyle. In entertainment there are often 5 words used to foster a common goal: the show must go on. Simple words. An idea I once found empowering... The concept that regardless of whatever else happens, showtime will arrive. I think of all the times I tried to raise the alarm to a concern in this business. How often was I dismissed? What was said to me? What did everyone want?.... We can't worry about that right now, the people want to be entertained. How often have I warned others of those who covered up assault? How many chose the side of assaulters for money and clout? The music business is built on covering up abuse. Events are no different. https://lnkd.in/gRErnnth

Introducing… a new generation of Music Hubs 🎵 🪴 We’re investing over £101 million in new Music Hub Lead Organisations on behalf of the Department for Education. This means: 📍 New Hub Lead Organisations will receive over £76m to coordinate high-quality music education in every local area. 🔧 They’ll also receive an additional £25 million to invest in new instruments, equipment and technology, including instruments for children and young people with special education needs or disabilities. The new Music Hub programme is a major milestone to achieving the National Plan for Music Education’s vision that children and young people should be able to sing, create music, and progress their musical interests. This investment also helps bring our #LetsCreate vision to life, increasing access to: 🥁 musical activities ☀️ opportunities 🎓 teachers 🎷instruments The programme will make sure the creativity of every child and young person in England is valued and given the chance to flourish: no matter who they are, where they go to school, or where they spend their free time. 🔗 Learn more about the new generation of Music Hubs👇 https://buff.ly/3vCoowX

We’re preserving the culture of our special entertainment precincts. Too many property owners move into these precincts, attracted to their liveliness, only to wage war against that very culture once they settle in. By letting owners know upfront that they're moving into one of these precincts, we hope to reduce the number of residents hellbent on shutting down operations at neighbouring venues. And it’s just one part of our plan to bring back Sydney’s vibrant nightlife and end the antiquated rules that stifle culture in NSW. From tearing up baffling “no entertainment” clauses or limits on how many musicians can play at a venue – we’re turning up the dial on live music.

The recent announcement by Arts Council England regarding the selection of new Music Hub Lead Organisations and designated areas across the UK has sparked significant interest and discussion within our community. As we contemplate the future of youth music in our nation, it's crucial to weigh both the pros and cons of these developments. On the positive side, the appointment of new Music Hub Lead Organisations presents a fresh opportunity for innovative leadership and diverse programming tailored to the needs of young musicians. These hubs have the potential to serve as vibrant cultural centers, fostering creativity, nurturing talent, and promoting inclusivity within the music industry. Moreover, the designation of specific areas underscores a commitment to equitable distribution of resources, ensuring that young people from all backgrounds have access to high-quality music education and performance opportunities. However, it's essential to acknowledge some potential challenges associated with these developments. The concentration of resources and decision-making power within designated Music Hub Lead Organisations may inadvertently marginalize smaller, community-based music initiatives. Additionally, there is a risk of perpetuating existing inequalities if the selection process does not adequately consider factors such as socioeconomic background and geographical location. As we reflect on the future of youth music in light of these announcements, I'm eager to hear your opinions and insights. What do you perceive as the most significant opportunities and challenges presented by the new Music Hub Lead Organisations and designated areas? How can we work together to ensure that all young people have access to the transformative power of music? Let's engage in a constructive dialogue to shape a vibrant and inclusive future for youth music across the UK! https://lnkd.in/dwDqPRAc #ArtsCouncilEngland #YouthMusic #MusicEducation #CommunityEngagement #Innovation #DiversityAndInclusion #ArtsCommunity #MusicIndustry #UKCulture

For cities to stay competitive, developing the night time economy and quality of life for its residents, the role of music and musicians needs to be understood and supported. As identified by the Observer last weekend, the threat of "rock'n'roll theme parks" is real... Camden, and places like it, need active pipelines to develop new talent and musicians, and to do this, the economic conditions for creativity to flourish need to be inclusive and accessible. Cheap and free rehearsal space, affordable housing, and grassroots music venues which are viable all create these conditions. Young audiences are different. Business models and costs of operating venues are changing dramatically. For Camden, it's crucial that the next generation of the grassroots music ecosystem is cultivated - rethinking the role of music in society and how this can be sustained needs to happen organically, from the ground up. Our work on London Borough of Camden's new Evening & Night-Time Strategy identifies the next steps in this evolution, sourcing spaces for grassroots activity and empowering communities to access them. #camdentown #nighttimeeconomy #grassrootsmusic #camden #livemusic
