John Daw volunteered with Forestry England at their 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 helping to install dormouse nest tubes and footprint tunnels. 🌳 Tubes and tunnels were installed within a working hazel coppice (undergoing active coppice management) as well as in mature woodland compartments with very little woodland management (at present); which will hopefully provide some interesting results. Both tubes and tunnels will be revisited later this summer and autumn to record (hopefully) the presence of hazel dormice on the site and help inform future management works. If dormice are found to be present, then this will kick start a monitoring scheme using wooden nest boxes as part of the National Dormouse Monitoring Programme run by PTES and raise public awareness of dormice being present at the arboretum. 🌳 #ecology #volunteering #dormouse

I am glad to announce my participation in the 2024 Urban Forestry Institute conference! To register for the event, please visit: https://lnkd.in/e7guiugg I will be presenting on the topic: "Cultivating Urban Sustainability: A Statewide Analysis of Food Forests in Florida" This study aims to explore the characteristics of food forests in Florida, including their locations and respective USDA plant hardiness zones, areas, garden designs, ages, types of managing organizations (private, governmental, for-profit, and non-profit), and plant species composition. In partnership with the Florida Forest Service, this research seeks to disseminate knowledge through the creation of an ArcGIS Story Map and a comprehensive booklet. It aims to promote sustainable practices and empower individuals interested in initiating or enhancing food forests within similar USDA plant hardiness zones. Looking forward to sharing insights and engaging discussions! #UFI2024

Join this webinar on April 17 hosted by the Northern Forest Center offering a panel discussion of the new report Beyond the “Illusion of Preservation” with three of the author group. The report addresses the imbalance of wood production and wood consumption in New England and, laying out a vision for 2060, encourages taking regional responsibility by protecting forests, reducing consumption, and expanding ecological forestry in the region. https://lnkd.in/exKttU7Q

Excited to join us for urban tree planting? Here’s where your volunteer efforts fit in! See the full picture, from seed establishment to community enjoyment. Learn about the lifecycle of a tree and how you can make a difference. 💚 🌱 Step 1: Seed establishment starts in greenhouses, followed by Step 2: Seedling growth in nurseries. These early stages set the foundation for our urban forests and parks. 📝 Step 3: Planning with forestry professionals considers soil, climate, and community needs. 🌲 Step 4: Careful stock selection by experienced forestry professionals ensures the right trees are planted in the right places. 🚚 Step 5: Trees are transported to project sites with volunteer help. 🗓️ Step 6: Join us for tree planting events where volunteers like you make a direct impact! 💧 Step 7: Communities enjoy the benefits of urban forests for years to come. Tree maintenance ensures healthy growth and wildlife protection. ♻️ Step 8: End of life considerations—trees are recycled or repurposed to ensure sustainability. #UrbanPlanting #TreePlanting #TreeLifecycle #Trees #Canada

Planting trees is one of the most recognisable forms of environmental action, but why is UK tree planting so important? We decided to ask Jen Turner from the Royal Forestry Society, an expert in woodland management who has spent the last 11 years working across Britain’s ecology sector. You can read her response right here in our blog post: Why is UK tree planting so important? Planting trees in a changing world… #rfs #treeplanting #climatechange #whytrees #greentheuk

Are community forest leaders downwardly Accountable? Evidence from Cameroon. Our recently published article reveal a low level of downward accountability by community forest (CF) leaders, due to inadequate capacity of community members to provide incentive to CF leaders for effective downward accountability. This poor downward accountability was further aggravated by the total exclusion of traditional authorities from CF legal arrangement. Sustainable community forestry in Cameroon requires for forestry stakeholders and the government of Cameroon to make more effort in enhancing community capacity to demand for accountability by ensuring that all elements of accountability mechanism (answerability and enforcement) are effectively implemented.https://rdcu.be/dEh4d

What you’re looking at in this photo is a utility ROW that once had over 60 units of Eucalyptus trees directly underneath overhead power lines. The trees were removed, and with proper guidance, replaced with the Southern California native Toyon, Heteromelese arbutifolia. This section of San Diego Gas & Electric ROW is now more reliable and safe. Their customer is satisfied with the continued service of revegetating the land with a species that will soon provide privacy and forever maintain compatibility with the overhead power lines. Just another example of how arborists running a utility tree program can make positive change in this world 🌎 🌳 💡 Davey Resource Group, Inc. 🌿Social forestry is a powerful approach that gives local communities the rights and incentives to sustainably manage and protect their forests. When tenure rights are secure and benefits are shared equitably, communities become dedicated stewards of these vital natural resources. This collaborative model not only strengthens communities economically and socially but also promotes better forest conservation. Discover how #socialforestry can drive positive change 👇🏽https://lnkd.in/g8TbV3By #ClimateAction

The Clyde Climate Forest was launched on 1 June 2021, involving The Conservation Volunteers and other leading environmental organisations (see the list below), plus the eight local authorities within the Glasgow City Region. The project is being delivered as part of the Glasgow & Clyde Valley Green Network. Over the next decade, ten trees for every man, woman and child will be planted. With a population of 1.8 million that means around 18 million trees will be planted, increasing woodland cover in the region from 17% to 20%...
The CCF Team will be at the Royal Highland Show this weekend, come along to the Forestry Arena to talk all things tree planting. With 1.8 million trees planted and counting, can you help us plant more?
