Action for Wildlife Day 2024 was held on Saturday 10th August. Organised by Hen Harrier Action and other charities, this event aims to raise awareness of this species and the need for sustainable upland management. As one of our most iconic British birds, RSK Biocensus has worked to ensure potential impacts on Hen Harriers are fully considered within development projects. This involves: 🦅 Conducting detailed surveys to identify areas used by Hen Harriers during the breeding and wintering seasons for nesting, foraging, roosting and dispersal. 🦅 Identifying where potential impacts on Hen Harriers may occur from projects. 🦅 Specifying measures through which projects can avoid and mitigate for impacts on Hen Harriers. 🦅 Advising on approaches for the maintenance and enhancement of habitat for Hen Harriers, to ensure projects have a positive effect on the species. #wildlife #ecology #henharrier

🌱 This #SeedSeptember, we're shining a light on the unsung heroes behind our reforestation efforts, like seed orchards – which provide a stable source of seeds to forests and communities for decades. American Forests and partners are investing in innovative solutions to support and scale up our seed orchards. Not only do we manage a seed orchard in the Texas Rio Grande Valley in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), but we are also developing an innovative seed orchard in South Central Oregon that will produce enough seeds to grow 7 million seedlings! https://lnkd.in/ecFus6Pz

I spy with my little eye, something that is... TINY! Elise and Jag, WPC's Taylor's checkerspot butterfly technicians, were on their surveys last week and managed to spot a couple of Taylor's checkerspot larva out in the landscape. Only a couple of millimetres long, these little larvae will eventually grow into adult butterflies, adding to the wild population WPC is helping to build. The team identified 9 different matrilines (9 unique lineages of female ancestors) and collected 120 caterpillars from the field for raising in the lab. By collecting these endangered larva, we ensure their transition to adulthood is safe and they can be released once they are old enough to do so... where they can lay their own larva next year! Were you able to see the tiny larva? 🐛 More about the Taylor's checkerspot program: The Taylor's checkerspot butterfly is listed as endangered in Canada, and considered a keystone species. An environmental indicator for the health of the entire ecosystem, this special butterfly was once widespread in the San Juan Islands, southern Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands of British Columbia. It was believed to have disappeared from Canada until 2005, when 15 checkerspots were observed on Denman Island in B.C.'s Gulf Islands. Since then WPC has been working to support the butterfly by building the wild population in B.C. through conservation breeding and helping partner efforts that restore and maintain habitat for the species.

Rewilding hits Australia! Quolls are back after 50 years of extinction. The eastern quoll, once extinct on mainland Australia for over 50 years, has been successfully reintroduced thanks to the collaborative efforts of Rewilding Australia, and several other partners. Quolls were wiped out due to disease and predators. Their return helps restore ecological balance as they play a crucial role in controlling insect and small mammal populations. Initiative: Led by Rewilding Australia, this initiative has been in the making for over 15 years, with key releases beginning in 2018. Methodology: Quolls were translocated from Tasmania and equipped with GPS collars for monitoring. The project is heavily funded by the government, NGOs, and private donors. Achievements: The quolls have started breeding and adapting well in Booderee National Park, despite challenges like bushfires and low densities of predators. Future Steps: Continuous monitoring and management are planned to ensure the quolls thrive and to potentially replicate this success in other regions. Let us keep rewilding and bring back Earth vital signs place by place. #NatureRestoration #EarthRegeneration #ConservationSuccess #EasternQuoll #WildlifeReintroduction #Biodiversity #EcologicalRestoration #AustraliaWildlife #ConservationEfforts #SustainableEcosystems #Rewilding #BoodereeNationalPark #EnvironmentalStewardship #WildlifeProtection

This is the first time in nearly 40 years that we've seen a sihek fly free in the wild. This is a momentous day that has been decades in the making. Wildlife globally is under threat, and the success of seeing these birds fly in the wild once more highlights just how zoos, scientists and conservationists – working with governments and decision-makers – have the power to protect species and take huge steps in bringing them back from the very brink of extinction. The sihek made their maiden voyage from Wichita, Kansas to temporary aviaries on The Nature Conservancy preserve and research station at Cooper Island on August 28, 2024. Specialists have been caring for the palm-sized birds, ensuring that the sihek safely settled into their aviaries, acclimatized to their new homes, and received daily feedings. Prior to release from the aviaries, each sihek was given a health exam. A tiny radio tracker was fitted to each bird so the project team can monitor their movements as they settle into new habitats across the atoll. Sihek are a territorial species, and the team expects the birds will establish home ranges quickly, which will also help with locating and monitoring them – which will provide insights on their habitat use, foraging, and eventual breeding. Supplemental food will also be available to help them transition to the wild. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ewwFppeF This project acknowledges the hard work of many partners including GUAM DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, many of Association of Zoos and Aquariums especially Sedgwick County Zoo and Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and ZSL.

🦬🌟 Happy National Bison Month! 🌟🦬 This month, we celebrate the majestic American bison and its significant role in our nation's history. Theodore Roosevelt, a passionate conservationist, played a crucial role in preserving these magnificent creatures. 🏞️🇺🇸 In 1905, Roosevelt co-founded the American Bison Society (ABS) to address the alarming decline of the bison population. The ABS, under Roosevelt's leadership, implemented several key actions to save the bison from near extinction: Bison Relocation and Breeding Programs: The ABS worked to establish new bison herds by relocating bison from existing private herds to protected areas. They started breeding programs to increase the population and ensure genetic diversity. 🦬 Creating Bison Reserves: One of the society's major achievements was establishing bison reserves on protected lands. The ABS successfully lobbied for the creation of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma and the National Bison Range in Montana, providing safe havens for the bison to thrive. 🦬 Public Awareness Campaigns: The ABS raised public awareness about the plight of the bison through educational campaigns, encouraging support for conservation efforts. Roosevelt’s influence and advocacy played a crucial role in garnering public and governmental backing. 🦬 Partnerships with Private Landowners: The ABS collaborated with private landowners to manage and protect bison herds on private lands, promoting sustainable practices that benefitted both the bison and the landowners. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the ABS and Theodore Roosevelt, the American bison population began to recover, and today, these magnificent creatures roam freely in several protected areas across the United States. The black-footed ferret was thought to be extinct in the wild in 1981. Today, there are about 400 ferrets in the wild and roughly 300 in captive breeding programs at zoos. 🌈 How did this species bounce back from the brink of extinction? The journey began with the discovery of a small surviving population on a ranch in Wyoming, which catalyzed a captive breeding program that has become a cornerstone of the ferret's recovery. Central to the recovery efforts has been the restoration of habitat and the management of prairie dog populations, the primary food source for the ferrets. By ensuring healthy prairie ecosystems, these programs not only aid the ferrets but also enhance biodiversity and support other native species. Another key aspect of the ferret’s rebound has been collaboration among a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, ranchers, local communities, conservationists, scientists, and Tribal Nations. Finally, increasing public awareness and education about the plight of the black-footed ferret has helped garner support for conservation efforts. While the recovery of the black-footed ferret is arguably a conservation success story, the path ahead remains challenging, with persistent threats such as disease and habitat loss.
