Ever wondered why you should patent your innovation? Patents are a valuable business asset: 🔬 They are used to protect research and innovation – and to affiliate it with the company. ⭐️ This can help build up the company’s reputation for being innovative and also reward the efforts of engineers and scientists through recognition as inventors. 🔒 Patents can give your company a competitive advantage – for example, by securing patent protection for an innovation, you control who, if anyone, can use or perform that innovation. 💸 Patents can be used to produce an income – for example by selling the asset, or through a licencing deal. 🤝 A patent portfolio can also be used in a defensive way – for example, it can be used for negotiating with competitors if FTO becomes an issue. ↗️ And for all these reasons, patents tend to increase a company’s valuation. 🤑 Which in turn tends to be appealing to investors! Organisers of the UK’s largest lab-focused industry show, Lab Innovations, say they have already matched exhibitor attendance levels for the previous record-breaking year. Do you have Chutzpah like Swiss Biotech Day 2024? Next week Basel will once again become a healthcare hotspot when more than 2000 industry professionals will come together for #SwissBiotechDay 2024. Experiencing the thriving biotech scene first hand and connecting with R&D and manufacturing leaders and entrepreneurs boosts my energy every year.   This year will not only allow me to meet many old friends, it will also invite me to make many new friends. And what a choice: more than 100 company presentations, > 100 exhibitors, > 40 panel discussions, 10 pitching sessions, and 17 international delegations.   As I prepare my participation, I’ve come across an inspirational article about courageous doers who have Chutzpah. “Chutzpah” is a Yiddish term that has found its way into the English and Hebrew language to describe a remarkable quality that combines audacity, confidence, and a touch of impudence. It is a term that embodies the art of pushing boundaries and challenging conventions in a way that often amazes or confounds others.   At first sight, Chutzpah doesn’t strike me as a typical Swiss quality, but then my international friends keep telling me “You are not a typical Swiss!” – do they mean I have Chutzpah?   The presenting companies at next week’s #SwissBiotechDay have Chutzpah: the advanced biotech companies such as Basilea Pharmaceutica and Ferring Pharmaceuticals have it, as do the emerging and clinical-stage biotech companies presenting. Entrepreneurs and start-up company founders have it as do the 100 exhibitors who have mastered the skill of dealing with “an ocean of rejection”, as Daniel Pink would phrase it.   Last year, the #SwissBiotech Association (SBA) celebrated its 25th anniversary. As Michael Altorfer, CEO of SBA shared, "Switzerland has established and expanded its role as a leading life sciences research, development and manufacturing hub, helping to develop new therapeutic treatments and establish new modalities and platform technologies to address global medical needs."   If you’re keen to accelerate the development of novel treatment solutions through affordable and on-target people solutions, reach out and let’s meet! Initial thoughts: ePitching event…meh...probably a huge meeting, and you are just a number on a huge list. AND probably the remote presentation makes it lose even more of its focus 😑 But then... We were encouraged by our European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Project Officer to apply, and we've really been impressed by the actual event concept and organization itself: It is a very focused group of very exciting companies in the field (obviously ourselves, but also AMT Medical, Aortyx, NIMBLE Diagnostics, Healium Medical and Xeltis) - all focused on the common fight against #Cardiovascular and #Respiratory diseases. Moreover, the event is adjudicated by a panel that includes the investors themselves. And we were concomitantly coached by the competent crowd of Dealflow.eu and facilitated by EurA AG and EuroQuity - Bpifrance. And a rehearsal meeting really got the presentation juices flowing (for lack of a better metaphor). 🥣 Proof is in the pudding: we have already been approached by two participating investors for a 1-on-1 and another two additional investors that just saw the event being advertised!
