An example is the work on 'Breath analysis for detecting cystic fibrosis and Pseudomonas exacerbations'. Ongoing monitoring of cystic fibrosis patients has been complicated by the widespread introduction of the drug TRIKAFTA into treatment plans. Established testing techniques relied on sputum as a source of biomarkers but TRIKAFTA reduces sputum production so as to render sputum sample collection almost impossible in the majority of patients. A 40-year-old drug that everyone had forgotten about could actually be a potential treatment for diseases like Parkinson’s and maybe even some cancers. Recent research from a team at National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) determined that auranofin, a drug around for decades treating rheumatoid arthritis, is remarkably effective at clearing out defective proteins that accumulate in the body. This discovery is crucial not only for Parkinson’s disease but also for several cancers. While much more work is needed, including clinical trials in humans, these are the kinds of insights we at Every Cure are passionate about. Uncovering important mechanisms in old drugs, especially those that lack commercial incentive, is where we see immense potential.
