The Galala Bird Observatory in Egypt is to become a reality thanks to a record-breaking donation of $125,000 from Global Birdfair. 💵 The donation was announced today and marks a significant achievement for the 2024 "Creating Brighter Futures" project. 🌞 The Galala Bird Observatory, which is spearheaded by the Egyptian Ministry of Environment and BirdLife's Partner, Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE), will play a crucial role in monitoring bird species that utilise the African-Eurasian Flyway. This flyway is a key migratory route used by hundreds of thousands of raptors, and other soaring birds migrating from Africa to Europe every year. 🦅 Global Birdfair raises funds for conservation annually and donates funds to BirdLife International for a project chosen by Global Birdfair for that year. Tim Appleton and Penny Robinson, founders and organisers of Global Birdfair, would like to thank all those who helped raise this amazing sum. 🙏 Watch the full video on our website and the Arabic version here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUiPJ5Ar #GlobalBirdfair2024 #GlobalBirdfair

(sharing from Cheetah Conservation Fund) Just a little more than a century ago, there were still nearly 100,000 cheetahs in the wild. The cats were found throughout most of Africa and into Asia, through the Arabian Peninsula to the Caspian region, and into India and Pakistan. But, over the last century, cheetahs have disappeared from most of their historical range. Today, the cats are found in only about 9% of their past distributional range - and there are less than 7,500 mature cheetahs remaining in the wild. In Asia, cheetahs disappeared from the wild almost entirely during the first half of the twentieth century. Asiatic cheetahs now persist only in Iran, and there are believed to be less than 40 individuals remaining. In Africa, cheetahs also occupy just a tiny portion of their historic range. Most of the continent’s remaining cheetahs are found in East Africa and within a swath of Southern Africa that extends into six countries – Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia. While cheetahs are currently classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Northeast African cheetah, a subspecies found in the Horn of Africa, was reclassified as Endangered last year. Two cheetah subspecies - the Asiatic cheetah and the Northwest African (or Saharan) cheetah - are both currently listed as Critically Endangered. Mangrove forests play an important role in coastal environments acting as a natural barrier against rising tides and storm surges, and providing a natural solution to reducing carbon in the atmosphere. Although mangrove forests cover just 0.1% of the planets surface, they store up to 10 times more carbon per hectare than other terrestrial forests. Consider joining us for a new opportunity in the Osa Peninsula planting Mangrove Trees as part of our Blue Carbon Initiative. This project, with a planting season that runs annually from the end of May through the end of October, allows transient yachts and crew to donate and participate toward this work in Costa Rica’s crown jewel of biodiversity. Just 1,800 square kilometers, the Osa Peninsula is home to approximately half of the country’s 500,000 species. To learn more about our Blue Carbon Initiative and how you can help if you are planning to visit Costa Rica, follow the link in our profile. #yachtaidglobal #bluecarbon #bluecaboninitiative #costarica #mangrovetrees #mangroveforest #golfito #osapeninsula #yachtlife #superyachtcrew #crewlife #community #together #friday #family #donate #participate #humanitarian #altruism #coastalcommunities #carbonfootprint #onetreeplanted

Ring in the new year by helping to protect the nature that needs it most, whether through a donation, like, or share! 💚 While protected on paper, many national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites lack the resources and funding to ensure the region is monitored for illegal activities. So, while these vast natural areas have become the last habitat for wildlife and nature, they are also at a higher risk of destruction. Your support (in any form) helps us fight to preserve these ecosystems: https://lnkd.in/g-_QTj_7

Dear Network Friends in Canada ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ As Operations Director at A Rocha Canada, I’m writing today to ask for your help for one of our best defences against biodiversity loss and climate change. 🐝 🦉 🐞 🐟 🦅 Wetlands. They’re essential. And they’re disappearing fast. This story doesn’t have to end in loss. With your help, we can restore key wetland habitats and regain their countless benefits. Would you make a year-end gift to restore wetlands with A Rocha Canada? Our conservation scientists estimate that on average, it costs just $32.90 CAD to restore and protect one square metre of wetland. Because of the generosity of a matching donor, your year-end gift of $32.90 CAD will restore two square meters of incredible habitat! Double your impact to save two (or more) square metres of wetland this Christmas! Why Wetlands? ➡️Wetlands play a unique and essential role in the health of our planet. A few of the reasons we need to save our wetlands: 🌿 Wetlands provide homes to countless at-risk plants and animals. If you want to save endangered species, invest in wetlands. 🌿 Wetlands reduce the impact of both floods and droughts. If you want to reduce extreme weather threats, invest in wetlands. 🌿 Wetlands improve water quality by filtering out toxins. If you want clean water, invest in wetlands. 🌿 Wetlands keep huge amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere. If you want to fight climate change, invest in wetlands. 🌿 Around 70% of the wetlands in southern Canada have already been damaged or destroyed, but we are not too late to reverse the trend. Why Give Now? 📢 Your gift before midnight on December 31 will be matched to double your impact, making a huge difference for wetlands and other vulnerable habitats in 2024. Would you donate today? If so, please donate here: https://lnkd.in/dtknhHaJ Restoring a wetland is slow and requires long-term community commitment. But your gift will, over time, lead to transformation—for wildlife, for people, and for the planet. P.S. Canadians: Don’t forget to donate by December 31 to receive a 2023 tax-receipt!

If you’d invested €1,000,000 in 2001 you’d have… Alas, the graph below does not show the growth of a successful investment but net tree cover loss worldwide. Since 2001, the world has lost c. 1,205 million acres of tree cover (20 times the size of the UK), destroying ecosystems and reducing our planet’s capacity to act as a carbon sink. As shown in the graph below, the rate at which we lose tree cover is not reducing. As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, we choose a theme to support each year at Tokoro. This year's theme is #decarbonisation, and we split our contribution between UK and French charities. This week's post is to spotlight the French #charity we have supported this year, Association Arbres et Paysages en Gironde is dedicated to planting trees, shrubs and hedgerows to promote #biodiversity and preserve wildlife. Our donation will go towards harvesting seeds in the Gironde region. The seeds are then sent to a nursery to germinate and returned to the charity to be planted. This local supply chain allows to plant species already present in the ecosystem, protecting the region's biodiversity.

🌿 Rising from the Ashes: Reawakening Australia's Rainforests 🌿 Once upon a time, Australia’s rainforests were vast and teeming with life, but today they stand fragile and endangered. At Foundation & Friends, we have been passionately working to preserve these vital ecosystems through the Rainforest Seed Conservation Project. Since 2008, we've been safeguarding the genetic heritage of our rainforests, storing seeds at sub-zero temperatures to ensure their survival against extinction. With the unwavering support of our donors, we’ve expanded our efforts to include living collections and cryopreservation for species that need special care. Our collaboration with the Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience (ReCER) has been instrumental, allowing us to conduct genetic analyses that maintain diversity and identify resilient individuals. Together, we've equipped laboratories and propelled crucial research forward. Professor Maurizio Rossetto, Head of ReCER, shares, "Your donations have equipped our labs to analyse tens of thousands of rainforest plants. With your continued support, we can produce genetically diverse seeds for the Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy, aiding in the restoration of resilient rainforests." As we continue this important work, we invite you to join us in our mission. Learn more about our Rainforest Revival & Survival Appeal and consider donating to help us safeguard the future of these vital ecosystems. 🌱 #RainforestConservation #SaveOurForests #EnvironmentalImpact #Sustainability #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #FoundationAndFriends #ReCER #BigScrubRainforest #AustraliaRainforests #Conservation #SupportResearch https://lnkd.in/g2yyVD42

Guardians of South Georgia, regular givers, are helping to conserve albatrosses; supporting regular population surveys and research to understanding the birds’ distribution at sea whilst foraging. South Georgia is a globally important breeding site for various species of albatross, but habitat use by some threatened species is poorly understood. Using satellite tags that will enable us to track the birds in near-real time, Light-mantled Albatrosses will be monitored year-round. This will help determine whether their recent population decline at South Georgia is due to a change in distribution or their habitat use. Guardians of South Georgia make a commitment to play a lasting role in the preservation of South Georgia – its wildlife, environment, and cultural heritage. Can you make GivingTuesday ‘Guardian Tuesday’ and join as a Guardian of South Georgia right now? How can charities ensure that developers are achieving their biodiversity net gain (BNG) requirements? As of today, 12 February, under the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, the BNG requirement of at least 10% will be mandatory for new major development planning applications under the Town and Country Planning Act (TCPA) 1990. It will also become mandatory for small sites from 2 April 2024. These rules are designed to protect wildlife and improve natural habitats by requiring developers to improve the biodiversity rating of a site as part of its development. Find out more in Chris Sharpe’s and Rene Antonio’s article. https://lnkd.in/eWEpdmJJ #25YearEnvironmentPlan #BiodiversityNetGain #StoneKing #ConservationCovernant #Charity #CharityLaw #TCPA
