Last year the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) COP28 UAE and Global Renewables Alliance collaborated together to provide the intellectual and analytical justification for the Tripling Renewable Power by 2030 goal. https://lnkd.in/eAF4Pwgj I really enjoyed the great collaborative spirit within which we delivered this report! As the result of tireless action and leadership from many of IRENA Member States, the UNFCC, and civil society the world got specific target for one of the absolutely key elements needed to deliver on the goal we need to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. As I have written already, the Tripling RE Power goal is not a 'nice to have', its ambitious, but achievable and if we fail to deliver on it collectively, we fail on the Paris Agreement goals. It really is time to act. This year will be about tracking progress, as well as advancing other dimensions of the energy transition. It's exciting to see IRENA being entrusted with the custodial role in delivering that tracking framework. It'll be after I leave IRENA, but I am certain that my colleagues and all stakeholders will deliver the report we need. I am eagerly anticipating reading it already...

International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s latest Renewable Capacity Statistics report highlights that 2023 saw the largest increase in renewable energy capacity to date – with the addition of 473 GW of renewables. Despite this record growth, more needs to be done to accelerate progress to triple renewables by 2030 in line with the targets of the UAE Consensus. It's #Time4Action to deliver on the #3xRenewables target #WithHydropower.: "#SustainableHydropower needs to double capacity by 2050 to provide the #flexibility and #storage capacity necessary to support the growing #intermittentrenewableenergy sources. The world is not on track yet to meet this ambitious goal. #Water, #wind and #sun get the job done together.: The Tripling of global renewable energy capacity and the Transition to CleanEnergy will only be possible with the great contribution of Hydropower, since #Hydropower is the backbone of a decarbonized & clean electricity system. #Hydropower facilitates the #integration of large quantities of #intermittentrenewable electricity sources (#solar and #wind ) by offering long, medium and short-term #flexibility, incl. manageable #storage on all these terms. #Hydropower is the correct adress for the #securityofsupply, electricity network #flexibility and #storage capability on a large scale. #Hydropower sector will continue to play a #crucialrole in delivering the #transitiontogreenenergy. New International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report: Despite a record 14% increase in 2023, we need 16.4% annual growth in #renewables through 2030 to hit #3xRenewables. If last year’s 14% increase rate continues, the #tripling target of 11.2 Terawatts (#TW) in 2030 outlined by #IRENA’s 1.5°C Scenario will fall 1.5 TW short, missing the target by 13.5%. Furthermore, if the world keeps the historic annual growth rate of 10%, it will only accumulate 7.5 TW of #renewablescapacity by 2030, missing the target by almost one-third. "Renewables 2023" by International Energy Agency (IEA) ————————————————- ✅ 507 GW were commissioned in 2023 worldwide, a record increase of 50% compared to 2022, according to the ✅Photovoltaics account for 3/4 of these new installations. ✅ The IEA anticipates the "strongest growth" ever seen in thirty years over the next five years, an unprecedented pace that brings the planet closer to the goal set at COP28 in Dubai of tripling renewable energy by 2030 to reach 11,000 GW. ✅ In 2023, 96% of new onshore PV and wind installations are cheaper than new fossil fuel plants and cheaper than plants already installed in most countries. 🇪🇺 In Europe, capacity is expected to double between 2023 and 2028 compared to the last 6 years with +532 GW 🚀🚀🚀
