7 Facts about Earth Day: 1. Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, founded Earth Day in 1970 to raise public consciousness about environmental concerns such as pollution, oil spills and vanishing wildlife. He tapped into the energy of the anti-war movement, framing Earth Day as a “national teach-in on the environment.” 2. April 22 was chosen as the date for Earth Day because it fell between spring break and final exams, and organizers wanted to maximize student involvement. 3. Twenty million Americans, or about 10 percent of the country’s population at the time, took part in events and demonstrations on the first Earth Day. 4. The first Earth Day pushed environmental concerns onto the national agenda. That same year, Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 5. The first Earth Day in 1970 inspired the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, according to the EPA. 6. The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics. 7. Around 1 billion people take part in Earth Day activities around the world every year.

Today marks the 54th anniversary of the first Earth Day celebration back in 1970. At that time gasoline was still leaded, bald eagles were going extinct from DDT, and there was no Environmental Protection Agency, nor national clean air and water acts. Since then, much progress has been made. The Oregon Bottle Bill of 1971 greatly reduced roadside litter from bottles and cans. That same year, Oregon passed the Forest Practices Act (FPA) to protect water quality during timber harvests and other activities in forests. In 1962, Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" ignited an environmental movement by exposing the hidden impact of DDT pesticides on ecosystems and human health. Silent Spring was partially written in Clear Lake, California, which is home to one of the largest populations of Tribal people in the state. However, no Tribal community, person, or claim is named in Silent Spring, despite the environmental destruction of their homelands being meticulously documented and articulated from the moment of contact. Today, Pomo communities that live there rely on the health of Clear Lake and surrounding lands. The omission of critical Tribal insights in Silent Spring mirrors broader questions about the integration of Indigenous perspectives in the organic movement. The question is, “Where do Tribes fit in the organic movement?”
