Estimating the ROI of a digital twin is like searching for a needle in a haystack. There are few examples to learn from, and traditional financial metrics just don’t seem to capture the full picture. Everyone wants to know if it's worth the investment, but is ROI really the best measure of value?
With organizations often tied to outdated financial reporting, it's no surprise calculating a digital twin's ROI can be a roadblock. But I'm excited to see a shift in thinking! Many forward-thinking organizations are recognizing that digital twins can enhance sustainability and improve the lives of building occupants 🏢 . The Triple Bottom Line is a great starting point to measure this broader impact.
There's no one-size-fits-all framework yet, but we're paving the way. It's time to break free from the ROI myopia and explore the full potential of digital twins to transform our built environment.

🙌Proud of Reveal CEO Sam Wiffen for challenging the status quo at the NZ Digital Twin Conference this week.🤓
His comments sent a reminder to the room of the importance of digital twins not being used as just a buzzword or to inflate egos. Digital twins are only useful when created with the practicality and functionality of it's creation focused on how it will be used to improve workflows and enhance productivity rather than just a nice piece of tech.
Food for thought.

Earlier this week, Reveal CEO Sam Wiffen presented as part of the industry expert panel at the New Zealand Digital Twin conference hosted by Saifee Events. 🤓
With his distinctive approach and profound insights, Sam captivated attendees, shedding light on how efficient utility data management can significantly elevate the quality and productivity of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector.
Sam emphasised the critical lens of pragmatism when implementing digital twin technology. While digital twin technology has the potential to be a great asset, it's only a buzzword when not accompanied by high-quality, purpose-driven data integration. Sam underscored the necessity for a clear purpose when introducing digital twin technology, cautioning against investments that don't deliver practical benefits to the country.
This is a global issue; digital twins are frequently established without adequate maintenance and development, rendering their data obsolete as the world rapidly changes. Sam highlighted the importance of breaking down silos and refocusing on how data is captured, shared, and utilised, to support growth within our communities, rather than being lost or hidden behind policy and bureaucracy.
This is the driving force behind Undermaps, Reveal’s utility data management platform, which ensures stakeholders have access to the most complete and up-to-date utility data from the design to construction phases of projects, reducing the risks of budget blowouts and project overruns that can impact the economy, society, and the environment.
What’s your thoughts on digital twin technology and how it can be used to shape our World?
