Did you know that quite often children or youth who are blind or partially sighted can have low expectations put onto them from peers, society, and even family due to the negative stigma that surrounds blindness? These lowered expectations from those around them can result in children and youth internalizing them, reducing self esteem and even creating a sense of learned helplessness that could follow them into adulthood. At Blind Beginnings, we encourage a “no limits” philosophy to combat these lowered expectations through events and programs that shatter misconceptions about blindness and showcase the abilities of youth that are blind or partially sighted. For example, Blind Beginnings organized “Do The Grind Blind”, in which nine Blind Beginnings program youth completed the Grouse Grind, Vancouver’s most infamous hiking trail. This event even inspired a documentary produced by Accessible Media Inc.
