🌍 Join us at the World Water Forum! 🌍 From 18 to 25 May, you can find the Blue Deal at the World Water Forum (WWF) in Indonesia. Luzette Kroon represents our delegation. She aligns her agenda with Meike van Ginneken, the Dutch water envoy. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞? During the WWF, we emphasise the importance of: 📢 Collaboration within the entire water (supply) chain. To achieve SDG6, partners from the entire water sector in a specific catchment area must work together to address the broader interests of water. Local service providers, such as utilities, water authorities, and municipalities, play a crucial role in this. Therefore, it is essential that their technical, organisational, and financial capacities are in order. 📢 Long-term cooperation and sustainable financing for operation and maintenance. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦? We will be participating in sessions organised by the OECD - OCDE, The Nature Conservancy, UNESCO, The Water Footprint Implementation, and the High-Level Panel Navigating the Source-to-Sea Journey. Additionally, the delegation will engage in discussions with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). We will also formalise the cooperation 'climate-resilient-watershed investments' between The Nature Conservancy, Nature for Water, WaterWorX, and NWB Fonds. 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩? Environmental assessment practices in South Africa are crucial in ensuring the sustainable development of the country while protecting its natural resources and ecosystems. With a diverse landscape that includes mountains, forests, grasslands, deserts, and coastal areas, South Africa is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species that rely on a healthy environment to thrive. The environmental assessment process in South Africa is governed by the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), which requires developers to assess the potential environmental impacts of their projects before they are allowed to proceed. This includes conducting studies on the potential impacts on air and water quality, soil stability, biodiversity, and the overall ecosystem. One of the key principles of environmental assessment in South Africa is the consideration of public participation. This allows for input from local communities and stakeholders who may be affected by a proposed development, ensuring that their concerns are taken into account before any decisions are made. Public participation helps to increase transparency and accountability in the decision-making process, and ensures that the environmental assessment process is truly inclusive and representative of all stakeholders. In addition to public participation, environmental assessment practices in South Africa also include the use of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and strategic environmental assessments (SEAs). EIAs are conducted for individual projects to assess their potential impacts on the environment, while SEAs are conducted at a broader scale to assess the cumulative impacts of multiple projects or policies in a particular area. The environmental assessment process in South Africa also includes the consideration of climate change and sustainable development. With the threat of climate change becoming increasingly urgent, environmental assessments must now also consider the potential long-term impacts of projects on carbon emissions, water usage, and other environmental factors. This is essential for ensuring that development in South Africa is both environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. Overall, environmental assessment practices in South Africa play a vital role in protecting the country's natural resources and promoting sustainable development. By considering the potential impacts of projects on the environment, engaging with local communities and stakeholders, and promoting sustainable practices, South Africa is able to balance the need for economic development with the need to protect its natural heritage for future generations. #sustainabledevelopment #eia #nema #environmentalconsulting

Green Week on Water Resilience has started ! We kicked it off this morning with a Green Week Partner event panel organised by Living Rivers Europe NGO coalition that invited me to provide SUEZ's perspectives and recommendations. There are many solutions and those that are suitable for certain areas are maybe not pertinent to others. This is why water resilience has to be evaluated on a local level to take into all considerations. Governance aspects as well as lack of implementation need to be addressed. Water is transversal and must be considered more clearly in policy and future strategies by taking into account quantity as well as quality. Water is crucial for our well being but also our competitiveness. Finally with a gap in investments in water infrastructures of 25 billion euros per year in Europe, we need an earmarked Water Fund to complement existing economic models in Member States. I thank the other speakers on the panel for their very pertinent interventions. The Belgium Presidency helped ensure water was important during their term, Portugal and some member states called for actions earlier this year to ReWaterEU and WWF Spain gave examples of the situation in Spain and called for action and not simply reaction. The Commission hosted conference was very good that started with an excellent intervention by Maroš Šefčovič. Lets ReWaterEU! Lets make this a high priority on the EU Agenda. #waterwiseEU #GreenWeekEU Telma Branco Rafael Seiz Louise Duprez

[💧Water] Exciting News! 🌍Earlier this month, I shared an important update on the anticipated appointment of a UN Special Envoy on Water. And here she is ! Mrs. Retno L.P. Marsudi, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia, has officially been appointed as the UN Special Envoy on Water! This appointment marks a crucial step towards enhancing global water governance, especially as we face increasing challenges related to water scarcity, pollution, and climate resilience. 🌱 Why This Matters: Water is not just a resource—it's life. The urgency of addressing water-related issues is higher than ever. Mrs. Marsudi’s new role will involve mobilizing international efforts to secure sustainable water management, ensuring that water becomes a central focus in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This appointment follows the decision made during the United Nations Water Conference in March 2023, where world leaders recognized the need for stronger global leadership on water issues. 🌊 Looking Ahead: This announcement is a powerful reminder of the progress we can make when we prioritize collaboration and innovation. I look forward to seeing how her leadership will elevate water issues on the global stage, just as we discussed in my previous post on this topic. Let’s continue to support such critical initiatives for a water-secure future! #WaterGovernance #Sustainability #UNEnvoy #GlobalWaterCrisis #SDGs #WaterResources

Experts urge holistic approach to climate resilience and sustainable development in Southern Africa A high-level conference on "Fostering Sustainable Futures: Integrating Climate Resilience in Southern Africa" was recently held in Windhoek, Namibia. The conference brought together renowned experts in sustainable development policy, including Claude Kabemba from the Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW), to discuss the critical issues surrounding climate resilience and environmental sustainability in the Southern African region. The experts emphasized the pressing need to integrate environmental sustainability with economic and social development. They highlighted that natural resource management must be approached holistically, considering the long-term well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. A comprehensive proposal for a three-pronged approach centered on knowledge, governance, and sustainability was presented to the conference participants. The experts stressed the necessity for transparency, scientific knowledge, and sustainable environmental practices in resource management. They urged legislators and corporations alike to prioritize national interests and ensure fair and equitable resource management for the present and future generations. During the conference, the speakers delved deeper into the challenges faced in the region, including the rampant consumption and excessive natural resource extraction that often fails to lead to sustainable development and causes environmental damage. The need for robust legislation that prioritizes environmental protection over investor capital interests was strongly emphasized. Additionally, the immense potential of the Inga Dam project in the Democratic Republic of Congo was highlighted as a sustainable energy solution with the capacity to power the entire African continent and beyond. The conference also featured a contribution from the Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, who shared Zimbabwe's approach to natural resource governance. The Speaker underscored the importance of utilizing research scholars as knowledge bases and the necessity for capacity-building of Members of Parliament on environmental legislative responsibilities. The program concluded with a visit to the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary, where participants learned about the sanctuary's initiatives to address human-wildlife conflict. The final recommendations and the way forward for the conference will be released in the coming days by the SADC PF Secretary General, Ms. Boemo Segkoma.
