Are online events still worthwhile for Museums? Rachel Walker and the team from the Royal Academy of Arts shared their insights on delivering online events and art-making classes at a recent MuseumNext conference. Over the past two years, the RA has successfully transitioned to an online format, driven initially by the need to stay connected with audiences during the pandemic. This shift has allowed them to reach wider audiences, with over 20,000 tickets sold and a significant portion of participants joining from outside London. Their offerings include the popular Saturday Sketch Club, evening art-making courses, and livestreamed talks. Key to their success has been a collaborative approach, involving close coordination between the public programs, AV, and marketing teams. Technical investments funded by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Digital Accelerator Program have also been crucial, enabling high-quality broadcasts. The RA's online program has not only generated revenue but also fostered a vibrant online community, expanding access to art and creativity. As the RA moves forward, they continue to refine their offerings, ensuring they meet audience needs while aligning with the organization's strategic goals.
