7️⃣ “Change is inevitable, but justice and equity are not” Colette Pichon Battle WHAT IF WE GET IT RIGHT? 🌍 https://lnkd.in/gyZCRN_y Section 7: Community Foremost; Diasporas and Home Life is changing, it is going to change more in the coming decade - with respect to the climate itself, our adaptation to climate volatility, and implementing climate solutions. It is not only what we do in the transition that counts but how we do it. This is an inspiring interview that puts the focus on community - community is the answer to not leaving people behind. The changes create massive opportunities. In Victoria, Hazelwood coal fired power station shut down operations in 2017 and Loy Yang A is due to be closed in 2035. That is lots of smart people, lots of skills, and lots of water! The opportunity is to reinvest in the community to make something special of these spaces - a bit like Kintsugi (process of repairing pottery with lacquer and gold). For #NationalWaterWeek2024 and on topic of #AcceleratingAction - one recent water treatment project was a real standout example. It provided the remote community of Koh Tnout in Cambodia with a more resilient water supply and markedly improved water quality. The project also supported a renewable energy start up and provided great opportunities for upskilling of engineers in both Australia and Cambodia. Humanity faces two existential crises. The climate crisis we know well; the second, less appreciated threat to humanity is biodiversity loss. Renewable energy projects can also impinge upon the tangible and intangible cultural values of land and seascapes held by Indigenous Australians. By supporting selected environmental and climate protection projects, we have been making an additional active contribution to greater climate protection and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, we are supporting the Thai Hoa wind power project in Vietnam to promote the expansion of renewable energies globally. Decarbonisation-reducing our carbon emissions through a green energy transition, needs to be a top priority in our policies, agendas, strategies and development plans. It's proven, practical, and scalable, and moves us from a point of speaking of the importance of climate change mitigation, to actual climate change mitigation!

Last week, my LinkedIn feed was packed with posts from New York Climate Week and UNGA, and it was good to see the GOGLA team, Patrick Tonui, and Carlos Sordo in action! Meanwhile, 11,800 kilometers away in Nairobi, the GOGLA team is busy getting ready for #GOGSFE24 the world’s largest off-grid energy event (big shoutout to Claire Nelson, Sinem Ulug Ercan, Luca Benke, Laura Bonilla Galvis, and the entire GOGLA team!) New York was all about #climate action at a high level, and I’m ready to discuss how off-grid solutions can tackle the global climate and energy crises. The momentum around #M300 is exciting. This goal and the broader energy access goals are only possible with a financially sustainable off-grid sector that can scale to meet commercial demand and energy access demand. I look forward to discussing M300 with colleagues from the The World Bank, African Development Bank Group, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), The Rockefeller Foundation, and The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). We are gathering in Nairobi because access to energy is the foundation for financial inclusion and off-grid products and services are critical to reaching these ambitious energy access goals.
