A recent survey by Temporary Use Aid reveals that 73% of charities find it moderately or extremely difficult to secure spaces. Conducted with over 200 charities, volunteer groups, and social enterprises, the survey highlights the pressing issue of space acquisition in the non-profit sector. However, there's hope. By collaborating with charities, property owners can save more on business rates than through 'box-shifting'. Small charities have seriously been through the wringer. Struggling to keep their doors open, at a time they're needed more than ever 💔 And, with the loss of the Small Charities Coalition, then The Foundation for Social Improvement, the future of infrastructure support feels uncertain. Last year, 360Giving's report found: • Very few trusts and foundations fund the sector infrastructure organisations, making it a "very fragile ecosystem." • There has been a decline in the overall number of infrastructure organisations. • There were disproportionate numbers of closures for organisations serving minoritised communities (including Black-led and disability organisations). • Due to structural inequity, these infrastructure organisations were also less likely to secure contracts. • Without these infrastructure bodies, there was less support available for Black and minoritised community groups. It feels like a constant uphill battle. But we won't stop fighting for change, and demanding support for small charities. 2024 feels like it's going to be a big year for the small charity sector. Let's stand together. We've got this 💪 P.S. The amount of money donated to food bank charities has increased by 50% year on year, according to our research. This increase comes at a critical time, as the latest official statistics from the government reveal that 3.3% of households used a food bank within the last year. The operational costs for these essential charities have also increased due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. As a result, there is an urgent need for increased donations to ensure that they can continue to pay rent and to keep the lights on. Neil Heslop OBE, our Chief Executive, reflects on the community's response: “Even when times are tough, it’s heart-warming to see how people respond generously to support charities around the UK providing for more and more families.
