There are waves of inaccurate claims on the nutritional credentials of plant-based drinks spreading like wildfire across the media and social channels, which are not only false and scare-mongering, but also cause unnecessary pressure and worry for people. And this is particularly relevant for parents trying to do the right thing by their children that have dairy intolerances or allergies. Alongside our client Oatly we are delivering an ambassador programme with a difference, working with a number of registered dietitians to land science-based fact checking posts about oat drinks on social channels, debunking some of the biggest myths out there. Not only is this positive content spreading far and wide across TikTok and Instagram but we’re seeing genuine impact from the people we set out to reach, which is of course the ultimate aim. Some examples pasted in comments if you want to see. And this is just the beginning - there's plenty more to come...

At the recently concluded #WorldFoodIndia 2024,I could not help but notice this Danone stall from far . A big graphic there mentioned milk with a combination of some prebiotics.I could not resist thinking about the extreme similarity of such a formula with a plant based one in terms of nutrient density. I walked upto the stall and had a chat with Mr Pankaj Joshi there ,an old employee of Danone group. On asking about the relevance of such a product,he replied that since dairy intolerance and milk allergies are being often detected these days ,their brand has formulated this to ensure that Aptagrow(Danone brand) is more easily accepted by children without the usual discomfort associated with dairy consumption. Phew…the heights to which dairy industry can go to in an attempt to normalise a concept which is certainly not so normal for humans.Dairy consumption is not a normal concept considering the vast segments of people having dairy allergies and lactose intolerance even within India . #kyunkidoodhnahinpeetahaipooraindia #vegannutrition #plantbased

🥘 New proteins and allergens: challenges in allergenicity assessments 🫛 The rising global population, shifting diets, and increased strain on farming resources are pushing the creation of new foods. These factors, along with people's interest in trying new diets, might lead to higher consumption of unfamiliar proteins or more of certain ones, which could increase the occurrence of both known and new food allergies. 👉🏼 Assessing the allergenicity of novel or modified protein-based foods encounters several challenges, including uncertainty surrounding acceptable risks and assessment criteria for determining safety. This paper synthesises these challenges, addressing the varied interpretations of "safe" across jurisdictions and societal attitudes towards allergenic risk. 🔗 https://ow.ly/TTpT50Sfekm

Pectin is a natural component extracted from plant cell walls, primarily sourced from fruit peels like apple and citrus. Compared to colloids of animal origin or synthetic ones, the natural essence of pectin makes it highly favored among consumers, especially in today's pursuit of natural and healthy food options, aligning well with market demands. Additionally, plant-based colloids generally pose lower safety risks, with a reduced probability of adverse reactions like allergies, thus offering significant advantages in food applications. #NaturalPectin #HealthyFood #PlantBasedIngredients #FoodSafety #PectinApplications

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies affect an estimated 6% of children in the U.S. Similarly, lactose intolerance is an impaired ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products, and effecting approximately 65% of the human population. Dairy products, being an integral part of modern protein-enriched diet is losing its market owing to epidemic lactose intolerance level globally. Due to increasing health awareness, lactose-free food market is establishing strong grounds and exploiting the lactose intolerant consumer base. 🎯 Quantitative Validation of the Allergens Lateral Flow Device 🍞 Currently, the only treatment for food allergies, food intolerance or celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict allergen-free diet. Food allergens may be present as an ingredient but also inadvertent via cross contamination when sharing food processing machines. 🏆 To support a traceability of the food production process, from the raw material to the final product, Gold Standard Diagnostics has a complete solution for allergen detection. This includes the Powerline rapid detection kits, which effectively overcome the "Hook effect." This phenomenon occurs when allergen concentrations are too high, causing a decrease in the intensity of the test line. 👉 Register for the conference to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7bsxzAP

Encouraging local businesses to incorporate more plant-based options can have a positive impact on both the community and the environment. 🌎🌱 Restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, and even food trucks can benefit from offering plant-based alternatives like plant milks, meat substitutes, and vegan-friendly meals. By doing so, businesses can become more inclusive, accommodating not only vegans but also individuals with lactose intolerance (which includes nearly 2/3 of the population in the Middle East!), food allergies, or those simply seeking healthier or more sustainable options. Highlighting the growing demand for plant-based products can help businesses understand the opportunity to attract new customers and strengthen their community ties. Talk to your local cafe owner or local store manager 💛

During production, vegetable milk goes through rigorous steps and heat treatments (UHT) that allow it to be preserved for a long time. As indicated on the packaging, this product can be stored at room temperature whilst maintaining its characteristics. Nevertheless, excessively high transport or storage temperatures can alter the microbiological properties of milk, making it potentially unfit for consumption and leading to complaints and waste. Not all supply chain operators are sensitive to these issues, especially during the summer, and do not always respond adequately to foreseeable increases in ‘ambient temperature’ during storage and distribution. On January 25, 2024, according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the EU's Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods, and Food Allergens (NDA) issued a scientific opinion on the safety of Calcifediol monohydrate as a novel food. Following the assessment, the expert panel concluded that Calcifediol monohydrate as a novel food is safe for children and adults over the age of 11 (including pregnant and lactating women) at a maximum intake of 10 micrograms per day, and for children aged 3-10 at a maximum intake of 5 micrograms per day. #Calcifediolmonohydrate #Calcifediol #novelfood #sinoway www.china-sinoway.com

We're Allergic To Standing Still Over the Moo’s was born when its lactose intolerant Australian founder made the all-important decision that he wanted to be able to perch himself on the sofa next to his wife and scoop ice cream from the tub whilst watching Game of Thrones without fear of bodily reprisals. In 2023 34% of the UK population contributed to the buoyant plant-based movement (now worth £425m) by dabbling with a cow milk alternative. 1 in 10 adults and older children currently profess to being lactose intolerant, which can inadvertently lead to a multitude of uncomfortable not to mention unwelcome body rumblings which encompasses everything from tummy cramps and diarrhoea through to flatulence and heavy-duty nausea. With two gluten-intolerant sufferers within the Goodman camp alone it dawned on me just how many food lovers are suffering in silence from food allergies that could so easily be sidestepped or swerved. The underinning mantra of Over the Moo is thinking outside the tub. Whether it’s our move to sharing bags of bite-sized chunks, our unflinching commitment to sublime enrobing dark chocolate, or our appreciation of responsibly sourced coconut milk and all its nutritious ‘superfood’ virtues, sometimes it’s not wrong to nudge the goalposts! #seis #eis #investors #pitch #startup #plantbased #snacking #foodandbeverage #icecream #independentretailers #delicatessen #farmshop #healthfood #dairyfree #thegrocer #vegan #vegansnacks #angelinvestors #allergy
