The National Institutes of Health, the Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Army have temporarily halted all grants to the University of California at San Diego. The incident underscores the critical importance of compliance with reporting requirements. Federal agencies are increasingly stringent about delinquent reports, impacting not just individual projects but entire institutions. This situation at UC San Diego serves as a crucial reminder of the potential consequences of non-compliance and highlights the need for researchers and administrative staff to ensure all reporting obligations are met promptly. We all do our best, but hopefully having this information as something to send the more resistant customers we deal with may help to get some final reports done. Just finished reading the book titled "𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀" which is an engaging history of the founding of the U.S. Navy by Ian W. Toll. He tells the story through the eyes and lives of the original six frigates of the U.S. Navy, which were: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘦, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴. Toll includes the innovation details brought forward by Joshua Humphreys, Josiah Fox, and William Doughty who were all instrumental in the design and construction of these early frigates. Toll also shows us how the interplay of politics and wars led to the establishment of a permanent US Navy and includes insights into the Quasi-War against the French, the war against the Barbary Pirates and the War of 1812. Beyond these battles, Toll takes us to the internal battles between the Federalists and the Republicans, between Adams and Jefferson, and between a seafaring international-trade-focused North and a land-crop-based focused South. The political arguments sound familiar: The role of the states versus that of the federal government, and the need to invest in the Navy to protect shipping and merchants versus the need to balance the budget and keep taxes low. The result was almost always reactionary resulting in the US Navy being funded piece meal. One particular highlight from the book that stood out - as it aligns really well to the innovation spirit at SimVentions was this: "𝑂𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 3, 1813, 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑎 𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑛𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑒𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 “𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑝𝑒𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠, 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡𝑠𝑜𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟,” 𝑎 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑠ℎ 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑟." 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 to the general public set off a race by several private citizens and businesses to invest in the pursuit of submarines, mines, and torpedoes in hopes of securing a high return from that investment. If SimVentions had been in business back then, we would have certainly participated 🙂! If you share that kind of heart for innovation, check us out, we may be the perfect fit for you!

May we never forget that freedom isn't free. Today we give our deepest gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. As we honor those we have lost, we also recognize the important role our military plays as a conservation partner. Covering approximately 27 million acres of land, our nation’s military bases help support ecologically important habitats. One great example is Fort Riley, a five-square-mile Army base in the Flint Hills of Kansas. In addition to the Army’s First Infantry Division, Fort Riley hosts a population of greater prairie-chickens, which, like other grassland-obligate species, thrive in treeless grasslands. In this Ask an Expert, WLFW-supported researcher Caleb Roberts discusses how spatial targeting can be used to safeguard critical lek locations that become abandoned when pressured by woody expansion. Cranes are carefully removing the wreckage from the collapsed Key Bridge. As we remember those who lost their lives on that fateful early morning crash. We look forward to better shipping lanes and more clearance. #toughroadahead #armycorp #bridge #shipping #maritime #Transportation #supplychain
Less than a week out from the collapse of the Key Bridge, we're making progress on our coordinated operation to remove the wreckage and reopen the Port of Baltimore. We're grateful to The White House, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Coast Guard, US Navy, US Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, and all our partners in this mission. On Saturday, salvage crews began cutting the top portion of the north side of the bridge and Unified Command removed the first piece of wreckage. On Sunday, a 200 ton piece of wreckage was lifted, and today, weather-permitting, a 350 ton piece will be lifted. Two crane barges, a 650-ton crane and a 330-ton crane, are on the scene supporting the mission. A 230-ton land-based crane will take the wreckage off the floating crane to a disposal site. In addition, the Chesapeake 1000, the largest available heavy lift crane barge on the East Coast – which is nearly 200 feet long and can lift 1000 tons – arrived Thursday night and salvors are developing its lift plans. Additional vessels, equipment, and personnel are expected to arrive over the coming days. The State of Maryland is working around the clock to reopen our Port and take care of all affected by the Key Bridge's collapse.

This isn’t a new concept. How else have we seen cross-domain solutions: air defense, maritime fires, CAS, PNT? Here is - Information: the manipulation or control of contextual data to affect understanding of the battlespace. The crux of the issue isn’t that information is changing the battlefield - it’s that Information has become a domain within which to maneuver, hold ground, and seize the advantage. #TheFutureIsNow #InformationLiteracy #InformationWarfare #Military #Information #InformationDomain #Education #DigitalAge #AmericaTogether United States Marine Corps; US Navy; US Army; United States Space Force; United States Air Force; U.S. Coast Guard; Army National Guard; Air National Guard; National Defense University; National War College; Marine Corps University; Naval Postgraduate School; United States Air Force Academy; United States Naval Academy; Modern War Institute at West Point; United States Military Academy at West Point
It's this simple: If nations want to defend themselves and their interests by doing bad things to bad guys you have to have the data and technology tools to do that. Since people exchanged rocks for sticks and sticks for bows and bows for artillery with target acquisition over the horizon, this is the way. It's not shocking or new, it just is. For those who claim this is technocentric fascination, devoid of an understanding of the most reductionist principles of how military capability is used to deter or respond, you don't understand the character of the current challenge. At it's core an adversary is trying to disrupt our ability to find, target, engage and assess and we are trying to do the same. It is the same principle of decision advantage and creating a faster cycle time discussed in FMFM-1/MCDP-1 which all flows from having better information (data) and disrupting the ability of the adversary to have the same whether that is on a network, through deception, or under a cammie net. The tools are used by following all the standard steps of planning and reconnaissance to execution of a mission. It just happens that there are more ways to do that across more means in the current era. The Marine Corps is specializing in those attributes of the problem for a naval campaign and within the littorals. Can they be converted to other military problems sets and environment? Sure. But it starts with knowing yourself, knowing your adversary, and knowing your mission. That's it. That's all there is. https://t.co/Amn4oEspNV
