A few days ago, I had the privilege of participating as a panellist at Ashesi University's Research Festival. At the Research Festival, we delved into the fascinating world of AI and its potential to revolutionize transdisciplinary problem-solving and research. Sitting among brilliant minds, policymakers and passionate researchers, it was clear that we are on the brink of something extraordinary. The discussions ranged from the ethical implications of AI to the practical applications that are already reshaping industries. But what stood out most was the shared understanding that AI is not just a tool for innovation—it's a bridge that connects diverse fields, enabling us to tackle complex challenges in ways we couldn't have imagined just a few years ago. As the CEO of MegaQuest, I found this dialogue particularly inspiring. Our mission has always been to empower researchers and innovators with the tools they need to push boundaries and create impact. Seeing firsthand how AI can be leveraged across disciplines reaffirmed my belief in the power of technology to drive meaningful change. One key takeaway for me was the importance of collaboration (human-to-human, and then human-to-machine). In a world where problems are increasingly interconnected, no single discipline can provide all the answers. It's only by working together—across fields, industries, and perspectives—that we can truly harness the full potential of AI. I left the festival with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for what's to come. I’m eager to continue these conversations and explore how MegaQuest can further contribute to this evolving landscape. 🌟 Honored to have delivered a keynote at the Digital Inclusion in the Nordic-Baltic Region conference organized by Nordregio! 🌟 I had the privilege of opening the section on Future Trends: Digital Inclusion in the Era of Industry 4.0 with a talk titled "Digital Inclusion in the Era of AI." My focus was on the critical importance of promoting digital equity and inclusion as we navigate an AI-driven future. As AI continues to shape our world, there's a growing risk of further marginalizing the digital underclass. We delved into how AI systems, trained on vast datasets, can perpetuate existing biases in society, leading to algorithmic bias and unfair decision-making, particularly impacting marginalized groups. To combat these disparities, we explored strategies to foster a more inclusive digital landscape. Collaboration across sectors—government, private companies, non-profits, academia, and community groups—is key to pooling resources and expertise in advancing digital equity goals. My message underscored the need to: 🔍 Advocate for policies addressing AI's impact on social inequalities, tackling algorithmic bias, ensuring data privacy, and promoting equitable AI access. 📊 Establish systems to monitor AI's impact on social inequalities, using evidence-based research to inform policy and reduce disparities. 🏛️ Push for local and regional policy changes prioritizing digital equity and inclusion in AI governance, focusing on algorithmic fairness, data privacy, and equitable AI access. Some notable insights from our multigenerational workshops on GenAI including "Bridging Divides" - which took place at the Cambridge Public Library this past weekend. 1. The model seems to be working: It's possible to engage a diverse audience from different backgrounds and ages to learn, collaborate and reflect on pressing issues. We've witnessed individuals from various sectors - including AI novices, industry experts, college students, retired professionals, activists & tech enthusiasts - engrossed in activities and discussions that typically last 2 hours! Some have lingered well past the scheduled time. 2. There is a genuine sense of community: When asked what they liked most, participants typically converge on "community engagement", "shared insights" and the "opportunity to meet and hear from people they wouldn't normally cross paths with". For Joint Family, this is a big win! 3. Inclusive dialog and shifts in perspectives: Across sessions we have observed participants share a spectrum of views including antagonistic ones. By providing a safe space to explore and understand these differences we notice surprising & positive shifts in attitudes. Although our sample size is modest (~100-150), its a hopeful sign ! Most importantly, none of this would be possible without a fabulous group of participants ranging from 9 to 70+ ready to learn and engage with one another, a remarkable panel of experts Michaela Jamelska Anushka Singh Vasha DuTell Anne Carpenter who generously shared their perspectives on the potential of AI to catalyze positive change, the inspirational Dr. Joy Buolamwini who highlighted the biases & risks that need to be confronted, our wonderful moderators Puja Chaudhury Mahsa Abadian Amit Solanki Indira Pranabudi who guided thoughtful conversations on tough topics including identity, consent, stereotypes, data privacy & ethics, Jerry Goss for capturing the session on film, our collaborators Madeline Colker V. Muna Kangsen at the Cambridge Public Library and Junnet Ali Kristine Lazdina at Women Techmakers for supporting this event and last but not least the Joint Family team for tirelessly planning, facilitating & continually deliberating on what we can do better 😊! In recent years, we have seen the rise of two competing tech narratives. On the one hand, the narrative that idealizes technology’s power to solve our most protracted challenges and on the other, the narrative of the existential threats of technology and #AI more specifically. We need a new narrative that helps all of us become more responsive to the challenges and opportunities posed by technology. How do we build it? Our Executive Director, 'Gbenga Sesan will be sharing his perspective with other stakeholders on ‘building a common tech for humanity narrative’ at the Global Tech and Humanity Summit by Ashoka - Tech for Humanity on March 13. 🌟 The Humanity Code Dialogue dinners take place anywhere anyone wants to host one. Purpose: provide an outlet to process both the rapid onslaught of information about AI, as well as to take a step back and discuss what we actually want from our future with AI and the actions we should take. One week and counting before the kick-off of the GenAI Summit 2024 Southeast Europe in Athens, Greece! This unique event will explore how generative AI is transforming processes, professions, and industry verticals. I will be contributing by participating (remotely) in a panel on Open Source LLMs within the GenAI in Product track, alongside Kimonas Sotirchos and Aristodimos Komninos.
