Over one-quarter of harmful bottom-trawling activities recorded in U.K. marine protected areas (MPAs) in 2023 were conducted by just 10 vessels, none of which were flagged to the U.K. A new analysis conducted by Oceana, utilizing data from the Global Fishing Watch, uncovered approximately 100,000 hours of apparent industrial fishing within U.K. MPAs in 2023, 33,000 hours of which were carried out by vessels employing bottom-towing gear such as bottom trawls and dredges. The 10 non-U.K. flagged vessels, each over 20 meters long, were responsible for 27 percent of the suspected bottom trawling, whereas U.K. vessels conducted around 6 percent of the total 33,000 hours of suspected trawling. https://lnkd.in/deDSYuMB

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing has devastating consequences on marine #biodiversity, #ecosystems and small fisheries around the world. New #data show that fishing vessels regularly go dark shutting their AIS to fish in marine protected areas! "Alarmingly, the study found that untracked fishing vessels frequently operate within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including significant numbers within the Galápagos Marine Reserve and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Within the Galápagos Marine Reserve alone, the study found more than five “dark” vessels were fishing per week. An Oceana analysis of the same protected area found more than 53 instances of Chinese-flagged vessels appearing to turn off their tracking devices for more than 27,000 total hours over the course of two and a half years. This previously unmapped activity highlights the vulnerability of even the most iconic and supposedly well-protected marine environments."

Ship-to-ship bunkering, or the transfer of fuel (often oil) from a supplying ship to a receiving ship at sea, is one of the issues SST has weighed in on recently.  Oil spills, noise, and increased ship traffic carry risks to marine life. SST recently submitted comments on the revised South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) Bunkering Code of Conduct, to ensure the proper control of bunkering in Algoa Bay. This was necessitated by SAMSA’s January announcement that it would once again be granting bunkering licences to ships in Algoa Bay. Algoa Bay, a recognised Hope Spot or an ocean area of particular sensitivity, is home to the endangered African penguin and the largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape gannet in the southern hemisphere. It is also "the bottlenose dolphin capital of the world", famed for its frequent sightings of these graceful creatures. It is vital that we do everything we can to protect marine life in Algoa Bay.
