Meet Lawton Henderson, our Spring 2024 intern, and a senior at East Carolina University! He is learning the inner workings of each department at Visit Greenville, NC, and doing some industry research for Greenville-Pitt County Sports Commission! Learn more about Lawton in our interview below ⬇   Q: What is your favorite part about working at Visit Greenville, NC? A: Definitely working with the team and getting to know everyone.    Q: What is your post-grad plan? A: I would like to travel internationally before starting my career.   Q: What is your perfect day in Greenville? A: Going to an ECU Football Game, hitting the gym, and finishing the day with dinner at Angus Grill.   Q: If you could have dinner with 3 famous people from any time, who would they be? A: Joe Rogan, John Lennon, and Albert Einstein (he thinks it would be an interesting conversation).   Q: What is a fun fact about yourself? A: I have a cocker spaniel named after Jimi Hendrix.

In the immortal words of Bon Jovi - “Woah, we’re halfway there…” Halfway through my secondment with Poppyscotland and what a four months it has been. Over those months, there have been many, many, many day… I’ve distilled them into one of the five different types. 1️⃣ a school day: with new areas of IG to learn about (enjoying raffles and regular giving), and reshaping my love of legacies. New techniques for DM, and different ways of working. 2️⃣ a planning day: planning my time to ensure that I can fit it all that is important, and moving aside the bits which I have absolutely ability to change or impact. 3️⃣ a reflection day: talking with those in my network about what I’ve learned, what’s gone well, what hasn’t, and what would I do differently next time… 4️⃣ a prioritising day: understanding that my priorities, really aren’t everyone else’s priorities, and that their priorities really aren’t mine too. With a little caring and sharing still gets the job done! 5️⃣ a “not today Satan” day. Enough said. I’m looking forward to a few more types of days, as I move into months 5, 6, 7 and 8 - there’s a another song on there somewhere….

Customer service book lists are awesome. One bit of advice: you don't have to read them all. 1. Focus on one specific customer service challenge. 2. Pick the book that can best help you solve it. 3. Apply what you learn from the book as you go. For example, The Effortless Experience is fantastic if your goal is reducing customer friction. Never Lose a Customer Again is perfect if you want to retain customers through effective onboarding. Hug Your Haters is excellent for turning negative feedback into opportunities for growth. Who should read my book, The Service Culture Handbook? It's for leaders who want to get their organization (or team) obsessed with customer service. The book is a step-by-step guide for building a service culture. Thanks for putting this together, Max!

Following on with our Coffee Catchups we spoke with Kevin, our Senior Duty Manager, to find out more about his role and responsibilities, and how he got started in his career. What’s your favourite part of your job? "Working with staff on the floor and trying to build them, trying to get the best out of them, and building up their confidence. I left school with no qualifications, but I had someone who believed in me, so they put me through my holiday park management course, my NVQ level 3 in Management.
