The Uplands Sewer Separation project has begun, with phase one (Humber Catchment) underway. Did you know: 2️⃣ The existing combined collection system is comprised of two main catchment areas, Humber (Phase 1) and Rutland (Phase 2). 🌊 This work of separating the sanitary sewer and storm water systems will help provide mitigation against the risk of sewage overflow into the ocean and reduce strain on CRD facilities downstream. 📝 This project is one of Oak Bay’s major infrastructure commitments under the regional Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan (CALWMP). Stormwater in our rivers – it's a topic that's been in the news a lot this year, and for good reason. This is a major environmental concern and not something any of us wants to see. At PBJ Engineering Services, our work with water companies gives us a front-row seat to the industry's efforts in tackling these environmental challenges. We're all about supporting improvements in our wastewater infrastructure. And there's been some positive news on this front. In the last week, Southern Water has announced the installation of a new £1 million storm tank at Edenbridge Wastewater Treatment Works in Kent. This vast structure allows more stormwater to be held at the site instead of releasing it into the environment. This development benefits nearby rivers such as the Eden and the Medway. And with Southern Water committing £1.5 billion to clean our waterways, hopefully, it's the sort of thing we'll see much more of in the coming months. #WastewaterTreatment #WaterPollution

There's been plenty of scrutiny on the wastewater industry in the UK recently — with good reason and environmental purpose. But if there's one infrastructure project that's got just about everyone excited, it's the Thames Tideway London project — London's much-anticipated super sewer. With a diameter of seven metres, extending over 15.5 miles, and coming in at a cost of nearly £5bn, this mega-tunnel is an impressive response to an overburdened system. London's old sewers are struggling, overwhelmed by a city that has grown beyond its capacity. Sadly, that’s led to an increasingly polluted River Thames. The Tideway tunnel is set to change that, cutting down sewage overflow into the Thames by 95% and keeping the historic river clean and full of life. Operational testing begins next year. Did you see some of the recent headlines, in the Sunday Times and elsewhere, about London’s “Cathedral of 💩“ being ready for business? This really is a huge feat of engineering. Now that the gigantic ‘lid’ is in place (weighing 1,200 tonnes and 24 metres in diameter), sewerage can start pouring in here … 1.6 million tonnes of it!! No less than 15 miles long, and having taken 8 years to build, this really is one sewer to rule them all! The ‘super sewer’ is “designed to dramatically reduce sewage pollution in the central London River Thames. In a typical year, tens of millions of tons of storm sewage spill into the River Thames but, once fully operational in 2025, the new infrastructure will reduce those spills almost completely. The Super Sewer is being constructed by a joint venture of Costain Upstream Ltd, Bachy Soletanche and VINCI working for Tideway, the company building the super sewer for Thames Water.” Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could have real-time monitoring of water quality in our rivers? It’s becoming more & more clear to me that there is a huge need in the UK for intelligent drainage systems to control the risk of pollution and flooding by making better use of existing and new infrastructure. The £12bn investment that’s going to be spent over the next 30 years could be made significantly more effective by introducing intelligent systems instead of just building more & more basic assets. Ed Beard from the National Infrastructure Commission agrees, saying that their recommendations are to optimise existing systems prior to considering building new assets.
