HAPPY JUNETEENTH FROM THE MBLA! Yesterday, President Epperson-Temple gave remarks at the Massachusetts Bar Association's Annual Juneteenth Reception. A except from her remarks is quoted below: "Juneteenth stands as a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against racism, particularly the institutional and structural racism that underpinned slavery and continues to permeate our healthcare, our workplaces, and our educational systems to this day. It is a day to reflect on the long struggle for freedom and equality faced by Black people in the United States. While we acknowledge the progress made since 1865, we must also recognize the persistent challenges and injustices that remain. As lawyers, we have a profound responsibility to commit ourselves to the fight for civil rights and equal protection for all under the law. We must work to ensure that our society continues to progress forward towards true equality and justice, preventing any regression into old prejudices and inequalities." H.R.40 and S 40- Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act This bill establishes the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans. The commission must (1) compile documentary evidence of slavery in the United States; (2) study the role of the federal and state governments in supporting the institution of slavery; (3) analyze discriminatory laws and policies against freed African slaves and their descendants; and (4) recommend ways the United States may recognize and remedy the effects of slavery and discrimination on African Americans, including through a formal apology and compensation (i.e., reparations). The commission consists of individuals from civil society and reparations organizations and individuals appointed by the President and congressional leadership; Members of Congress and governmental employees may not serve on the commission. The commission may hold hearings, subpoena witnesses and records, and contract with other entities to conduct its work.

#latestactivities Alliance for Justice: Pioneers in upholding justice and equality In the annals of American history, certain organizations stand out as beacons of progress and defenders of justice. Among them, the Alliance for Justice (AFJ) shines brightly, a testament to decades of unwavering commitment to upholding the values of equality, fairness, and constitutional rights. Origins and Mission The seeds of AFJ were sown in the turbulent year of 1971, a time when the "Powell Memo" sounded the alarm on perceived threats to the American economic system. Recognizing the call to arms for the business community to influence the courts, AFJ emerged as a bulwark against the weaponization of justice for corporate interests. Founded in 1979 by the indefatigable attorney and activist Nan Aron, AFJ was a response to the encroaching specter of far-right ideologies threatening to erode decades of hard-won progressive achievements. With a vision of a judiciary that mirrors the diversity of the nation and safeguards the rights of all its citizens, AFJ embarked on a mission to ensure that justice remains blind to influence and privilege. Author: Until You Walk in My Shoes: A Reframing Methodology to Overcome Systemic Discrimination, Originator of the Equity, Inclusion, and Individual Engagement Principle, Former Pharmaceutical Executive, Board Member
Is DEI a bad concept? During the Civil War both the Union and the Confederacy used States Rights to argue for preserving the Union and ending slavery on one side, and for secession on the other side. So, was the concept of States Rights a bad thing? So it is with DEI. There are those who blame DEI for all the present woes of the world, and on the other hand, there are those who focus on the E and I: Equity and Inclusion. So are Equity and Inclusion bad for humanity? #dei #equityandinclusion #deib #cic #safehavendllc #reframedoctor
