This is the biggest deal in the oilfield production chemicals market for many years - probably the most significant one since the 2012 acquisition of Champion Technologies by Ecolab, which was merged with Ecolab's Nalco Upstream Energy business to form market leader Nalco Champion, later renamed ChampionX after the business was sold by Ecolab to Apergy in 2020. The other big deal in production chemicals was the one that never happened - the mooted merger of Halliburton and Baker Hughes, abandoned in 2016, which would have brought together the legacy Baker Petrolite business with Halliburton's recently acquired Multichem business. SLB have been a relative straggler in production chemicals for many years, and have missed out on previous deals including the acquisition of Champion Technologies and Multichem. Clearly SLB always desire to be #1 or #2 in any market that they are active. This deal catapults them from a global #4 in the production chemicals business to a clear #1, further reducing choice for oil operators in this consolidating market.

Earlier today, I joined industry partners at the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) to discuss managing uncertainties for a prosperous future. What I took away from the conversation was not uncertain at all — our industry has a clear call to action. 1.      We need to execute on our commitment to decarbonize. This means collaborating to develop the right solutions at scale. 2.      Core oil and gas still has a long way to go to address the energy sustainability and affordability challenge. This means a step change in our industry's performance. 3.      We need to embrace the transition and attract talent, developing them to build the energy system of the future. At SLB, we are taking a balanced approach. We are reducing our own emissions, innovating technologies to help customers create more energy with fewer emissions, and we are investing in new energy technologies to power the future. Together with our partners in the industry, I am optimistic that we have the capacity to decarbonize not just parts, but the entire ecosystem, and we are moving in the right direction. #WeAreSLB #IPTC2024

Mr. Olivier Le Peuch it is very interesting as to what SLB's position is on the subject of "decarbonization;" the actions being taken to lower its own footprint; reference to "new technologies" and finally the rather, to me, an extremely optimistic and elaborate statement of acting and achieving the scale on the "entire ecosystem!" It is difficult to comment on your reasoning and conclusions in the lack of knowledge of the context of this panel and the participants, albeit they look overeaching. To this I am supposing that IPTC is an Oil and Gas Symposium with the impact participation of NOC's, IOC's, service companies such as SLB and "technology developers." I feel that this is not strong enough a group to essentially "steer such a large ship." Let us just evaluate: 1. The problem cannot be encapsulated by our industry alone as the "polluters" are based on philosophy of governsnce of COUNTRIES with each having its own challenges. It is quite evident that the decision making entities are backing away from the gusto that was formed a decade ago AND surprisingly enough there is a developing latitude and acceptability to underperform.
