As we celebrate World Architecture Day 2024 with the theme of Empowering the next generation to participate in urban design, I cannot help but reflect on my motivation behind my PhD research on Complex Urban Integration. My research explores how architects can address the socio-spatial integration of migrants, tackling some of the most pressing challenges our cities face today. Architecture isn’t just about designing buildings—it’s about shaping cities that are sustainable, inclusive, and equitable. Through my research, I aim to contribute to the knowledge that helps marginalised communities find their place in urban environments, ensuring our future cities are designed for everyone. #WorldArchitectureDay #UrbanIntegration #PhDResearch #InclusiveCities #SustainableArchitecture #ArchitectsForChange

Meet the finalists of the 37th Student Architecture Awards! LETLHOGONOLO SESANA Tshwane University of Technology 📚 THESIS: Investigating architecture's role in preserving South African birth rituals. Letlhogonolo's project delves into the intersection of selfhood, spirituality, and space in African contexts, enriching architectural discourse by exploring the role of architecture in preserving birth rituals amid cultural erosion in South Africa. The study proposes architectural interventions rooted in communalism and metaphysical continuity, advocating for the integration of cultural values into design to foster identity preservation. Additionally, it recognizes architecture as a medium through which rituals, representing metaphysical journeys across time, materialize. This understanding underscores architecture's capacity to articulate, preserve, and empower individual and communal identities. Through this holistic lens, architecture emerges as a transformative force, bridging past, present, and future narratives while embodying the essence of cultural expression and continuity. KRVIA Annual Events 2025 Urban Dialogues: 11th January 2025 The discipline of Urban Design & Conservation has today evolved to include many other aspects and it gets further complicated when we think about practice in the context of the global south and India in particular. The pedagogy of Urban Design & Conservation does and should reflect this diversity of practice and the 'Thesis' becomes an important tool as it is the culmination project for a student before they become professionals. Traditionally, the thesis has been an exploration of framing the urban question and designing the structure plan of possible solutions. But can the thesis also be an opportunity to think about implementation? Compared to Architecture or Urban Planning, the practice of Urban Design & Conservation is far less regulated by the State and there is no one set way of practicing it. The thesis therefore has the potential to explore different ways of practice. #krmls #krvia #urbandialogues #architectureschool #urbandesign #urbanconservation #architecture

We are pleased to announce the theme for the Charles Correa Gold Medal 2025! For the next 3 years, the Charles Correa Gold Medal will focus on thesis projects that address ‘Equitability through Design’. By raising the question, ‘Who are we designing for?’ the Gold Medal seeks to reflect on the opportunities and responsibilities that we as architects have in creating spaces that are equitable and inclusive. This encompasses equal access to space, shelter, infrastructure and the commons. The thesis projects will be evaluated in terms of how they address current spatial injustices through design, and how they approach equity and inclusion at different scales. Registration for the Charles Correa Gold Medal 2025 will open in May. Stay tuned for more updates! Charles Correa, architect and urbanist, initiated the Charles Correa Gold Medal in 1998 to honour the best undergraduate architecture thesis in India. As part of the Charles Correa Gold Medal program, the Foundation proposes to encourage students and schools of architecture to focus on pressing issues, and to highlight the role architects can play in society as "agents of change.” #charlescorreafoundation #charlescorrea #charlescorreagoldmedal #architecturethesis2025 #undergraduatethesis #thesiscompetition #studentforum #architecturecompetition #barch #designcompetition #architecturesketch #architectureschool #architecturedaily #architecturegram #architecturestudents #architectureanddesign

Rebuilding Urban Complexity by Francesca Froy is a must-read for anyone passionate about the future of urban spaces. This book provides an innovative approach to reconfiguring our cities, ensuring they thrive in a postindustrial world. Since spaces that are emerged from post-industrial processes which I call them as waste spaces in my dissertation pave significant commons for reactiving public spaces and this book provides great insights about this reclaimed spaces. A great addition for urban planners, designers, and policymakers. Check it out! Greatly suggested.

A world Architecture Day perspective. Dear UIA - International Union of Architects Council, As an architecture student, I appreciate the UIA's efforts to celebrate young architects and provide opportunities such as the upcoming UIA Young Architects Competition. However, while the theme of empowering the next generation is inspiring, I feel compelled to voice my concern regarding the broken architectural systems that many young architects face today. Despite the rhetoric of inclusion and participation, the harsh reality for many young professionals is a financial struggle that forces them to divert from their passion for architecture. The systems in place often do not offer the economic stability, mentorship, or opportunities needed to thrive. The profession has increasingly become inaccessible due to exploitative practices, inadequate pay, and a lack of proper support networks. These systemic issues have left many young architects disillusioned and financially unstable, leading them to abandon the field or pursue alternative careers where they feel more valued. The call to action for young architects to participate in urban design and contribute to sustainable development is ambitious, but how can we fully engage when the foundation we stand on is fragile? The profession needs reform beyond competition announcements and symbolic celebrations. We need to address issues such as fair wages, healthy work environments, and meaningful mentorship, ensuring that young architects are not only empowered to create but are also able to thrive financially and personally in this field. While I applaud the UIA’s commitment to showcasing young architects' ideas, let us also ensure that these same architects have the support necessary to build resilient careers within the profession. We must fix the broken systems that are holding us back. Respectfully submitted. To all the young architects out there: Your creativity and passion are essential in shaping the future, but never forget to advocate for your worth. While we are called to build sustainable cities, let us also build a sustainable profession for ourselves one that values our work, time, and potential. Stand strong, push for reform, and together we can reshape not only the urban landscapes but also the architecture systems that support our careers. #architecture #youngarchitects #worldarchitectureday #sustainableprofessions #youngprofessionals
