'QuTech Superpositions' continues! This is our weekly interview series in which we speak to a QuTech member about their work, their goals and what makes them happy.
👋 This week, we feature Fabio Sebastiano, Principal Investigator at QuTech.
❓ Hi, could you please introduce yourself?
💬 Hi, I am Fabio Sebastiano. Born and raised in Italy, but I moved to The Netherlands for my PhD (in Electrical Engineering). After that, I worked at NXP in Eindhoven for a few years. I have been living in the country for 18 years now (although you would not say so from my Dutch language proficiency). For 8 years, I ran my research group spanning between the Electrical Engineering faculty and QuTech, and I served as Research Lead of the QC Division from 2020 until December 2023.
❓ How does your work contribute to creating the quantum future?
💬 My research aims at creating the scalable (cryogenic) electronic interface required for large-scale quantum computers based on several platforms (semiconductor qubits, color centers, ion traps, superconducting qubits). I believe this to be a crucial system component that will become more and more relevant in the coming years. Thus, I want to be a bridge between the quantum computing world and the electrical engineers, in particular integrated-circuit designers. I pursue this not only through my research but also through teaching and international outreach, and aspiring to have an economic impact in the quantum ecosystem.
❓ What is your favourite thing about working at QuTech?
💬 It is great to work with inspiring people from very different disciplines, but always open to hear about a new idea for a collaboration or a far-fetched project, or pulling you into some new projects. I like to be surrounded by smart people with a strong motivation, and I value working in a highly collaborative organization that cares about each others’ well-being.
❓ What do you like to do outside of work?
💬 I spend most of my free time with my wife and two wonderful young daughters. But when I manage to find some extra time, I enjoy exploring some obscure new beers and expanding my knowledge in the world of European, Japanese or US comics. I have the ambition to run a marathon in the next 2 years, but I am still stuck below 20 km in my trainings.
