Today is World Environment Day, a day that encourages action to protect the environment and awareness of the global challenges we face. Alongside our clients, we try to produce work that enhances the world around us. We are dedicated to ensuring the longevity of our stands wherever possible, and always source our materials responsibly. No stand has embraced this ethos quite like our award-winning Google Earth stand. First rolled out in 2019, our design showcased the conscious approach Google was taking with its event offering. In an article published at the time Dusty Reid, the Marketing Event Program Manager for Google Earth, said: “We want to upcycle materials and use them in new and unique ways, because we don’t want to build booths that end up in the trash after just a few days.” And that's exactly what happened. Our original Google Earth stand has been exhibited nine times in the past five years. And this year it took its place at EGU Vienna 2024. The rustic aesthetic of our stand makes it pop in any setting and recycling continues to be a key element of the structure. Bike tyres have been transformed into plant hangers, melted plastic has been used to create multicoloured sheets for decoration, and wooden crates have been used for the framework. We have even incorporated materials from a demolished theatre. And when #EGU Vienna was over, the stand went back into storage, waiting patiently for its next chance to show just how sustainable design really works. #worldenvironmentday24 #sustainability #events

🌍 Waste is a Design Flaw 🛠️ On November 6th, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Design for Planet Festival 2024 by the Design Council. This wasn’t just another online event—it was a brilliantly designed experience that left a lasting impact on how I view the role of design in sustainability. ✨💻 The key message? 'Waste is a design flaw' - Sophie Thomas. ♻️ Every design decision impacts our planet. 🌏 In fact, 80% of a product’s environmental impact and cost is determined during the design phase! As designers, engineers, and innovators, we have the responsibility to rethink, redesign, and redefine what waste means in our processes and products. 🔄 From Patrick Grant’s inspiring keynote on regenerative design 👕 to the engaging Design Debate: Products vs. Business Models? 🤔⚡, the festival showcased transformative ideas about circular design, business innovation, and sustainable impact. This insightful article sums up the festival's core ideas beautifully: 'Waste is a Design Flaw' - Reflections on the Design for Planet Festival 2024 [https://lnkd.in/grAJRaVQ] by Pete Swift, Co-Founder of Planit. The festival reinforced my commitment to exploring Circular Design principles—like Design for Disassembly 🔧 and Self-Repair 🛠️—and applying them to Product Design and Sustainable Mobility. 🌱⚙️ 📚 Check out the article linked above and share your thoughts on waste in design? 👉 How can we, as designers and engineers, tackle this challenge? #CircularDesign #DesignForPlanet #Sustainability #ProductDesign #GreenJobs #WasteNotWantNot #InnovationForGood #Design

Physical movements, postures and gestures affect how we think and feel. What about collaborative spaces that encourage perching? Whether half-sitting on a stool, a rail, the back of a chair or the arm of a couch, people who perch will collaboratively generate more ideas than those who sit. There's a clear, observable correlation between what people's bodies are experiencing and what's happening in their minds. So, in any environment where idea generation is to take place, a perch is a good option that encourages an open mind, easy movement and active interaction. "Perching allows you to come together cognitively and emotionally, but not be overly tied to your physical position or your position on an idea." The Steelcase Flex Perch Stool offers a quick place to sit at an ideal 7.2 degree angle - while remaining fully engaged in mind, body and collaboration. Its innovative design incorporates up to 70% recycled content through a pioneering Ccycled™️ process in partnership with BASF that transforms e-waste into high-performance materials. Designed for circularity, Steelcase Flex Perch Stool is 100% recyclable, contributing to a system that recycles more effectively and productively for future applications. #sustainability #circularity #sustainabledesign #esg

#Design Disappointment: Baltic Design Struggles (Meh 😒) & Why Danish Design Thrives Being a designer from the Baltics, I’ve always admired what’s happening just across the water in Denmark. The solutions they are developing? Next-level. And it makes me wonder why so few Baltic designers applied to the Baltic Sustainability Awards. It’s honestly a shame. For instance, look at some of the innovations: 1. ALGIECEL - Turning industrial CO2 into high-value ingredients for food and cosmetics. This is not just good; it’s groundbreaking, showing how waste can be a business opportunity. 2. Reeftile - Biobased bricks for harbor biodiversity, mimicking coral and ocean life to improve marine ecosystems. It’s like bringing life back to human-made structures. 3. Gopad - A 100% biodegradable menstrual pad that disappears into the earth without leaving toxins or microplastics. I mean, this is the future we should all be working towards. And then there’s Vireo—turning hemp into a bio-based alternative to leather. Why aren’t more Baltic companies leading the charge in circular economy solutions like this? It’s frustrating to see the lack of participation when we have the talent, the ideas, and the need. As I reflect on these projects, I’m struck by the variety and depth of the solutions. They’re not just tackling sustainability on a surface level—they’re integrating it deeply into their design processes. It’s a reminder that, in the Baltics, we need to rise to this level of ambition. It’s not just about throwing a recycling symbol on your next product—it's about challenging the very way we think about design and impact. What kills me is seeing how few designers from the Baltics have even applied to the Baltic Sustainability Awards. Seriously, what’s the holdup? Are we just too comfortable with mediocrity? Or worse, are we so focused on aesthetics that we miss the bigger picture? So, my message to designers in the Baltics—let’s stop watching from the sidelines. Let’s step up, showcase what we can do, and prove that we can innovate with the best of them. Let’s make sure we’re in that conversation next year.
