Great article on the promise of a more accessible and level basketball playing field in the GTA and beyond. Good works Chris (and thanks for the share Marika)!
Here is a fantastic article by Christopher Penrose on basketball accessibility, published this week by Sport Information Resource Centre - Le Centre de documentation pour le sport (SIRC). He covers all the angles: why basketball matters, the national context, the issues, what needs to change, and Lay-Up's inspiring programming model. Big up yourselves Lay-Up!

THE RESEARCH SHOWS GIRLS LOVE TO PLAY AND PLAY HARD. EVEN SO, THEY START SPORTS LATER AND LEAVE EARLIER THAN BOYS DO – OFTEN BECAUSE OF FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS OR BECAUSE OF NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES. THAT’S A BIG PROBLEM BECAUSE GIRLS NEED THE BENEFITS THAT SPORTS OFFER. THE GOOD NEWS IS THE RIGHT COACH CAN MAKE ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE. So, on this #internationalwomensday why not take a look at Centre for Healing and Justice in Sport’s guide on How to get (and keep) girls playing. Youth Sports Parents Are Hypocrites! Prove Me Wrong Everyone says they want sports to return to the good old days when fun, fair play, good sportsmanship, and good values ruled the day. But as the stakes grow and resources become scarcer, are the youth sports leaders and parents walking the talk? Can they afford to? As a parent of young athletes, you are constantly bombarded with choices and opportunities. You start with a plan and standards for which you hold yourself and your family accountable. Then reality starts to hit; things are not as above board as you thought. The unfairness and gaslighting begin. You try to hold frame, stay true to yourself, and then an opportunity appears for your child; accepting goes against your basic tenets of right and wrong...kind of. Your decisions as a parent in these situations are crucial. Let's talk about it and explore the best way forward! Given the complex and often unfair nature of youth sports, it's clear that parents need a solution. Below is a code that will give you no-cost access to our AthleticSOS.com software solution for any high school athletes you may know who are seeking athletic scholarship opportunities. I've also added a link to a video that gives a brief overview of the software. Go to: AthleticSOS.com Select: "Need to Enter A Code?" Enter Code: 24ASOS Complete Registration. Enjoy! Youth Sports Parents Are Delusional! Frustrated!! Exhausted!!! Wow, I mentioned that parents of youth athletes were complaining too much about the time, financial, and emotional toll having kids participating in youth sports was having on them, and I said too bad, suck it up. And the response was different from what I had expected. I want to empathize with you as parents in this video, but with solutions, not excuses. There are ways to rethink youth sports participation that may make the process more tolerable and make the journey fun and fulfilling for you and your young athlete. Let me know what you think in the comments. ICYMI: Little League was announced as one of the nearly 20 partner organizations for The Aspen Institute’s new #63X30 Vision, aimed at getting at least 63% of youth playing sports by the end of the decade in 2030. According to federal data shared by The Aspen Institute, only 54% of children ages 6-17 in the U.S. played on a team or took lessons in 2022, down from 58% in 2017. As one of the partner organizations, Little League joins the other partnering organizations in committing to taking actions that can get and keep more young people playing sports, from creating affordable programs in underserved neighborhoods to promoting multi-sport sampling to developing more coaches to serve children’s needs. “As the world’s largest youth sports organization, we have an obligation to help lead the way in getting more children involved in playing sports and there is no better organization to rally behind than The Aspen Institute and Project Play. We are honored to serve as one of the partner organizations for this great new vision and look forward to helping to make this goal a reality by 2030.” - Patrick Wilson Read more about the new initiative→ https://lnkd.in/ePY6hb6X

#LetThemPlay - Small Sided Games 2024 The new small-sided game games programmes will commence again in March until November 2024, and this link (https://lnkd.in/e_m5seRg) will take you to some of the updates and the attached document provides some further recommendations. The Scottish FA, Scottish Youth FA, Scottish Women’s Football and Scottish Schools’ FA support the small-sided game for children to enable them all to develop but more importantly to have fun in a safe, nurturing and friendly environment. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we create the best possible environment for children and remember that they are playing football to have fun and enjoy the game in a relaxed atmosphere, and not to be shouted at negatively or have the fun taken out of the sport. As part of the new ‘Football for All’ strategy we are committed to #LetThemPlay which will help develop a more friendly playing offering to ensure all children enjoy the sport. We encourage everyone to remember that these stages of development should be FUN and ENJOYABLE and would ask everyone to reflect on some of the points below. Positive Environment - All parents, carers and other spectators must stay 2m back from the pitch, this should be done via a marked off area/zone. If you have match officials at 9V9 please be respectful and let them referee the game. Be Encouraging - Let the children play the game, making sure we encourage before/after the game. No negative shouting from the side lines; spectators should always encourage all participants. Equal Game Time – Ensure that all children are participating and try to minimise the number of subs during games and festivals. Where space allows, play more games, and have no one standing watching. Remember that the game results don’t matter in children’s football Play Local -Try to maximise opportunities to play by avoiding traveling for longer than the game time that a child might play. Scotland is a wide and diverse country and in more rural areas this might not be always possible, but reducing travel distances is advised whenever possible. Reducing travel is also important for environmental sustainability. Let Them Play – Don’t over coach; let players make their own decisions. Constant feedback reduces players decision making capabilities. Let young players take more ownership of their own learning. Balance is Better - Avoid early specialisation in sport. Avoid giving a child a set position and encourage children to play multiple sports. Research indicates that this approach helps player development and creates better all-round people who stay in sport longer. More detailed information on children’s football is available on the Scottish FA Grassroots APP, available for Android and IOS devices: https://lnkd.in/eCjMi3md

Where are all the not-so-good kid athletes?? Anyone who is familiar with youth sports knows that the lines of demarcation between athletic kids and nonathletic kids are drawn early on. Where do the “ordinary” (or worse) players go to learn a new game? What if we champion the idea that enjoying an activity is more important that being good at it? #youthsports #sportsmanship #competition
