Interpreting for a child can be a challenging task for community interpreters. As a professional, there may be occasions when you need to go beyond interpreting and being culturally competent. In such instances, you may be faced with a child, LEP. A school speech pathologist may hire an interpreter to find out if a student is proficient in their native language. This can help ensure that the child receives the best possible care and assistance. #communityinterpreting #culturalcompetence #speechpathology #languagecompetency

Keeping business professionals up-to-date with the law surrounding Deaf Discrimination. 'Deep-Dive' programs and in-depth workplace training because not all knowledge is obvious. We have FREE training on the website.
If you’re part of the legal system in any way and don’t know the difference between deaf, Deaf, or hard of hearing……If you have no concept of what it means to be Culturally Deaf (what are the central beliefs of the culture are you protecting)……If you approach Deaf-Discrimination as purely an issue of disability………. Then either DO NOT represent a Deaf client, or, get some cultural and compliance training to prevent Deaf-Discrimination. To protect the rights of this cultural and linguistic minority group- you have to be fully cognisant of the laws that protect their CULTURE and their LANGUAGE. There’s a free training session in the link below, which talks (at the end) about our 8-week culture&law crash course - but please also check online to see what other legal compliance programs we offer for Deaf-Discrimination.

Experienced Legal Consultant | Specializing in Employment, Corporate, Business, and Commercial Law & Visa Advisory | Supporting B2B Clients in UAE
Excellent point you've made. Seeing these preferences is frustrating, especially when we know that many highly skilled individuals are being overlooked. From my experience, non-native English-speaking lawyers often excel in language skills, and there are jurisdictions with more complex transactional work that produce highly competent professionals. This narrow focus on specific qualifications bypasses talent and expertise. Such practices need to stop. It's high time the legal sector, particularly in the Middle East, addresses its biases and embraces diversity and inclusion. Only then can we uphold the integrity and fairness that our profession is supposed to represent.
Finance and Technology Lawyer| Funds, Crypto, Fintech and Arbitration| UAE, DIFC and ADGM Laws| 20 years experience
We often see novice legal recruiter posts looking for UK, Australian, New Zealand, and occasionally South African qualified lawyers for legal roles. However, we never see this advertised by employers directly because they have policies on discrimination, inclusion, and diversity. I am unsure why these recruiters are looking for candidates qualified in the said jurisdictions or whether they got instructions to find candidates from those jurisdictions only. This is a blatant example of racism in the legal sector, especially in the Middle East, and we would never see this preference if you look at doctors or engineering roles. They are not looking for English lawyers qualified to do English law transactions. If you are looking for language skills, English is handled many times by non-native speakers better than native-speaking lawyers, from my personal experience. If you are looking for transactional skills, there are better jurisdictions where more complex transactions are conducted based on the sheer scale of things. You are looking for a particular breed, bypassing skills and other considerations. This should stop once and forever. Lawyers should resolve their own issues before acting as guardians of everyone else's problems.

Erin, what is your favorite thing about being a Speech therapist? "My favorite thing is watching my clients grow as independent communicators! I enjoy working alongside them to strengthen their advocacy skills, increase self-expression, and support them in living authentically." What do you love most about working at BYS? "I really enjoy the collaborative atmosphere and how willing everyone is to work together and jump in to help our clients." What is one Speech therapy fun fact or tip/strategy to help kids succeed that most people may not know? "A strategy I use with most of my clients is to reduce questioning. Using statements and declarative language instead of questions can have huge impacts on language growth, as it encourages conversation and use of new vocabulary!"

Can’t quite believe it but it’s my first day of SALT independent practice tomorrow! The relationship between independent and NHS Speech and Language Therapists (in my own experiences) have been nothing short of amazing opportunities to learn, network and collaborate. I’ve been interested in dipping my toes into some independent work as I believe people have a right to choose what and how they access different services. It also helps I’ll be working along side the loveliest team I couldn’t say no to!! Any tips advice for navigating the differences between NHS work and independent work?! #SpeechAndLanguageTherapy #SALT #independentSLT #NHSSLT #independentpractice
