In the spirit of “sharpening the saw”, I participated in a Design Thinking DC field session for the National Museum of American History this week. Question: How might we create a more inviting and engaging Constitution Ave entrance? So great to flex my DT muscles IRL with creative designers! #designthinking #smithsonian #creativity #brainstorming #prototyping
What a thrill for our DT:DC community to partner with the amazing Mike Denison, Head of Design for the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History, to reimagine the Constitution Avenue entrance of the museum to make it a more inviting, connected, and inclusive public space. A big thank you to our brilliant workshop leaders, Evan Chan and Fabiola Alvarez Yurcisin who spent hours preparing an insightful and inspiring experience and to Caitlin Anderson for managing all the details. The energy and creativity of the group was contagious. Here's a glimpse of what we achieved: 🔹 Fresh, innovative ideas to enhance the visitor experience 🔹 Collaborative designs that reflect the museum's rich heritage 🔹 A renewed sense of community and shared vision Finally, a huge shoutout to everyone who participated and contributed their unique perspectives. #DesignThinking #Innovation #MuseumDesign #Smithsonian #Collaboration #Creativity

Our $1 million investment in the museum community sparked a lot of change in 2023, including updates to help you better navigate and find resources that matter most to you and form deeper connections in the museum field! Here's some of what's changed in 2023: 📚 The new AAM Resource Library: We launched a redesigned library of thousands of resources, with new functions to help you find the guides, articles, and tools you need and the inspiration you want. We published 184 new resources, blog posts, and articles this year, powered by the thought leadership of museum professionals like you. 🌐 Museum Junction Upgrade: The vibrant online hub of more than 60,000 museum professionals got a major facelift, with a more interactive experience, easy-to-navigate feed, and over a dozen new peer communities to find the discussions that matter most to you. 🚀 Future of Museums Summit: We hosted this inaugural, virtual summit in November focusing on professional development and key issues for museums to face the future, like rapid digital evolutions and repatriation practices. Read the latest about one of our recent projects.
I am honored to share that the Neill-Cochran House Museum is the recipient of two awards, the Stewardship Award and the Preservation Award for Restoration, for Reckoning with the Past, the restoration of Austin's last intact slave dwelling, as a part of Preservation Austin's 2024 Preservation Merit Awards! This project was made possible by the tireless efforts of Dr. Rowena Dasch of the Neill-Cochran House Museum, Dr. Tara Dudley from the University of Texas, and my Fermata team (including Maja Smith of MajaDesign and iZone). This award is a testament to the dedication and commitment of this amazing group of professionals of which I was honored to be a participant. Join us at the annual Preservation Merit Awards Ceremony, which spotlights visionary approaches to preserving our city’s unique heritage. The following is a link to Preservation Austin's website for more information about the ceremony in November. https://lnkd.in/gXniC3ha

I appreciate this theme.
We’re gearing up for our 62nd Annual Meeting! 🤩 The theme for this year’s event is “Becoming Visible: The Importance of Women’s Stories.” We’re looking forward to gathering together, highlighting the past year, and being among the first to hear keynote speaker Elizabeth Babcock, who becomes director of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on June 3. Registration is open for the June 20 event, and there are three ways to attend: in person, at our Grand Rapids simulcast, and virtually. Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired, informed, and make new connections. Museums and Elderly people. Recently, I received a message from a former participant of a summer school from many years ago. She still remembers the topic I discussed there: Museums and the Elderly. It was when ... 2008?2012? This was the span of that summer school. I am very grateful that my words still resonate but nowadays, things have worsened, if possible. The most part of our Western cities are shrinking and colouring of more silver tones. Museums must confront the ageing of their societies and the changes in demographic trends. Demoscopic analysis, once outdated, now returns strongly relevant, with some modifications made necessary by cultural and rights transformations and awareness. This will be one of the topics I will bring in the discussion with Mattia Agnetti at the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia: Scenarios and Future visions for the Leaders of the cultural sector. #museums #leadership #museumrelevance #ageing #societalanalysis
