I'm getting nervous. Not for the Big Meet - that program looks ridiculously good - but because I next Monday will hold an introductory class for all first-year students at the Stockholm School of Economics (The Swedish version of Harvard, Nobel Prize institution etc.). It's the beginning of the obligatory course on Innovation Management, so one of the heavier ones for a school that is Europe's second-largest breeding ground for unicorns, just beaten by Oxford University. Since Oxford is way, way, way larger than SSE, this means that I will speak at Europe's top entrepreneurial business school. This year the course on innovation management will be all about food transformation, its challenges and opportunities. The course is led by the dynamic new Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg professor at the House of Innovation, Valentina Tartari (we at Sweden Foodtech have been somewhat involved in the conception). Let this sink in. Europe's top entrepreneurial business school has identified food as a topic to teach and study. Every student that exits the school in a few years time will have been marinated in food. That's never happened before and I know, because this is my Alma Mater. This will change things and perhaps a few new unicorns will be conceived within the school walls? That SSE has decided to embrace the transformation of food speaks volumes. The transformation of our food sector will affect our societies far beyond today's value chain, which means that the social sciences, like economics, will be front and center in understanding what's going on. The last time around we transformed our food system on the scale that currently confronts us we came up with the Green Revolution. That gave the American scientist Norman Borlaug the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. If Valentina will get another Nobel Prize for her efforts I don't know, but serious academic engagement with food system transformation and the ensuing policy and societal transformation does seem a worthy cause for future recognitions. I don't feel it's hyperbole to say I have great hopes for SSE becoming one of the leading international academic voices in the food system transformation, it is a fantastic home for those out there that want to engage with and benefit from some of the smartest brains on the planet. 2024 will go down as the best food transformation year so far! It is just a few days left to this year's edition of Sweden Foodtech Big Meet, this time in full synch with the Stockholm Fair and their GastroNord food trade show! Tue-Thu next week we will be in full discovery mode, learning, understanding and enjoying food in all dimensions, not the least the ones outside the plate, you know, where the true value of food resides. To be honest, for over a decade the quest for food to change has felt all but impossible, but we are reaching a tipping point. A few observations: - That farmers protest new EU regulations aimed at greening our European food production, forcing regulators to retreat does not mean the end, but the end of the beginning. Food transformation is now solidly on the tables of lawmakers who are beginning to understand the topic for real. That wasn't the case only a few years ago and now food sector transformation is something you can build a political career on as a savvy, young politician. Sorry old industry, you will loose this battle. - In spite of the above, farmers will win the day. Not by doing what they do today, but by becoming true custodians of nature and providers of all the glory of food. That will require some new thinking and new economic models but what farmers will realize is that the world is there for them. What we do not need are the current practices of huge monocultures and animal factories. - Science has taken grand leaps. What was novelty a few years ago, such as precision fermentation, lab-grown meat and the rest, is today practiced in labs and factories all over the world. The development is truly astonishing; like going from the abacus to the computer. The development is currently held back by regulators, but once the first novelties start to pass the legal hurdles, the hole in the dam will widen and, suddenly, boom! - People are increasingly measuring themselves, understanding more and more about what food does to them. - As to the above, data reins supreme. - VC investments in food are down compared to the last few years when money was free. Who cares. They are radically up compared to what was the case before the past crazy few years. Overall, money - and not just the tiny part that VC represents - is also transforming alongside food. The dynamics of a properly funded and entrepreneur-driven system transformation is starting to take shape. - Mighty incumbents are being held accountable for greenwashing. That the meat giant JBS is sued by the State of New York for such practices is only the beginning. Food companies, it is time that you start sending your problems to the innovation department (if you have any) instead of communications and marketing. More observations will be had at the Big Meet.
