As Sri Lanka’s pioneering women-led plastic waste collection network, they exemplify how dedication and innovation can transform challenges into opportunities for environmental stewardship and economic empowerment. In a significant move to enhance their efficiency and reduce environmental impact, these trailblazing women received e-bikes, empowering them to manage waste more effectively, keep our environment clean, and generate sustainable incomes. This transformative network flourishes with the support of USAID Sri Lanka, Gunadamin Elephant House - Beverages, and Viridis Recycling Centre. City Cycle Industries Manufacturing (Pvt.) Ltd. (Lumala), we’re proud to contribute to this mission with our innovative EcoHauler e-bike carts. They segregate the waste at the collection point, directing the recyclable waste to recycling facilities instead of landfills. This important step in the process takes so much load off our landfills. We all are aware that the waste collectors are mostly underpaid and face hazardous working conditions. We all can reduce their work load by keeping two separate bins for dry and wet waste at our homes. Under our Waste Management program, 42,948 households in rural Punjab segregated their daily waste and collect them in two separate bins. Last year we diverted 13,000 tonnes of waste from landfills. The dry waste collected in these villages is further segregated before sending them to recycle plants. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on #plasticpollution (#INC) is now convening in #Ottawa from April 23-29, 2024 to further discuss an international and legally binding treaty for plastic #reduction and transition to #CircularEconomy.  Key discussion includes #JustTransitions (JT) which can help reduce #plastics while also eliminating #poverty for affected populations like #wastepickers in the process. A study by Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group found that 41-60 percent of wastepicker incomes depend on plastics. In India, although wastepickers manage upto 80 percent of plastic waste, they continue to live and work in poor conditions. So as plastics reduce, what can a just transition mean for them? 1- Wastepickers do not pick up low value plastics, and most of their earnings are from high value plastics. Banning low value, #SingleUsePlastics and creating a regulatory framework for high value,  #recyclable plastics (like #PET) until alternatives are found. Despite prohibiting people from carrying plastic products in #wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, the problem of throwing waste specifically plastics is one of the challenging tasks for our field staff. This is the waste which our staff collect every month from Amrabad #TigerReserve #Telangana and segregates at Mannanuru for safe #disposal and #recycling. The efforts of Amrabad Tiger Reserve in making the reserve a good and safe place for our wild animals are commendable. Let's not throw away any waste, especially #plastics while visiting parks and sanctuaries. In India, a staggering 5 crore plastic milk bags are discarded daily, with only 10-15% being recycled. Most of these bags end up in landfills, contributing to severe environmental pollution. Our team has found a solution: converting these discarded milk bags into reusable granules. These granules can be transformed into a variety of products, giving a second life to plastic waste and significantly reducing landfill accumulation.
