This #NationalApprenticeWeek, meet Mark, whose apprenticeship with Sabre is being supported by the awesome Derwentside College.   1.     What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with Sabre Rail, and what do you hope to achieve during your apprenticeship? An apprenticeship journey with Sabre interested me, particularly because I had not previously worked in the rail sector. My primary goal is to cultivate and refine my skills while striving to attain a valuable qualification, ultimately leading the way for a successful and fulfilling career path. 2.     What skills or knowledge do you think you will gain that you believe will benefit you in your future career? Gaining skills and knowledge in a specialist trade will help me develop my career and focus on building my on-the-job experience in addition to gaining a valuable qualification. 3.     Can you share any goals or aspirations you have for your career after completing your apprenticeship? Once I have completed my apprenticeship, I want to keep advancing in the engineering field, continue to better myself and always give my best. 4.     What advice would you give someone considering a career in the railway industry through an apprenticeship program? It is a pleasure to reflect on the transformative experience of my apprenticeship at GKN Aerospace during National Apprenticeship Week 2024. This apprenticeship has provided a robust foundation for my career in the aerospace industry. It wasn't just about acquiring skills; it was about growing a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability. The challenges encountered became stepping stones, and the victories were shared successes, shaping my outlook on problem-solving, teamwork and inspired me to aim higher and push my boundaries. During my time, the hands-on experience had contributed greatly to my learning journey. The mentorship I received from industry experts was not just guidance but a catalyst for personal and professional growth. To new apprentices embarking on this exciting journey, my advice is simple: embrace every opportunity to learn, ask questions, and actively seek mentorship. The aerospace industry is ever-evolving, and your ability to adapt and innovate will be key! I recognised the importance of starting my career at a young age, understanding the value of gaining extensive knowledge and experience in engineering whilst obtaining a valuable qualification at the same time. 2.     What skills or knowledge do you think you will gain that you believe will benefit you in your future career? I’m looking forward to gaining invaluable hands-on experience in engineering practices within the rail industry, whilst also enhancing my academic qualifications knowing that this investment will benefit my long-term career prospects. 3.     Can you share any goals or aspirations you have for your career after completing your apprenticeship? As I continue to develop my skill set and expand my experience at Sabre Rail, my goal to pursue higher level qualifications and continually improve my capabilities. 4.     What advice would you give someone considering a career in the railway industry through an apprenticeship program? It’s day 3️⃣ of #NationalApprenticeWeek and we are delighted to shine the spotlight on Callum, a dedicated Sabre apprentice whose journey is supplemented by the amazing Derwentside College 🚅 1.     What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with Sabre Rail, and what do you hope to achieve during your apprenticeship? I was motivated by the long-term career opportunity rather than just a job. I can continuously learn and better myself whilst working towards gaining qualifications that will enhance my professional growth within the company. 2.     What skills or knowledge do you think you will gain that you believe will benefit you in your future career? Gaining knowledge about the varied range of machines used in our machine shop, becoming skilled in their operation, and gaining a strong understanding of the various manufacturing processes. 3.     Can you share any goals or aspirations you have for your career after completing your apprenticeship? My goals during and after the course, revolve around continuous knowledge to facilitate my personal development. I want to expand my skill set further, including areas like welding, to enhance my capabilities. 4.     What advice would you give someone considering a career in the railway industry through an apprenticeship program? In the next few days, 339 young people will begin their apprenticeship or dual study program at the German locations of Lufthansa Technik. The number of new apprentices is therefore slightly higher than last year. Despite the challenging training market, Lufthansa Technik filled 94 percent of the available places Lufthansa Technik attracted a particularly large number of applicants for industrial professions this year. At the Hamburg site alone, a total of 12 percent more advertised positions were filled across all disciplines compared to the previous year. In addition to the various apprenticeships, the company offers different dual study programs.
