The current legislation on the protection of animals during transport, adopted back in 2004, no longer reflects current realities, sustainability challenges, the latest scientific evidence and European citizens' concerns about animal welfare. In the video below we refer to some of the problems related to the transport of live animals. Unfortunately, these problems are not adequately addressed by the European Commission legislative proposal adopted in December 2023. A common occurrence: A cow born in Ireland, fattened in Spain and slaughtered in Libya. In the animal welfare NGO world, the live animal transport problem is a recurring topic that keeps us busy. But outside of this world, very few people will be aware of this issue happening behind closed doors, every single day. Beyond the immense animal welfare problems resulting from this system, there needs to be more conversations about the inefficiency of exporting live animals instead of meat and carcasses.
