🎉 Welcome to your retirement home, elephant Charley! 🐘 The sight of Charley arriving in his new forever home, in his custom-built elephant-sized travel crate, was a sight to behold – and something that no-one who was present will ever forget! 🚚 Charley can now officially call the 10,000-hectare species-appropriate Shambala Private Game Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa home. 🌳⛰️ Now in his adaptation enclosure, Charley will begin his acclimatisation period. FOUR PAWS, in partnership with the #EMSFoundation in South Africa and Shambala Private Game Reserve, worked closely behind the scenes to ensure the best retirement plan for the 42-year-old African bull. Keep your garden safe—and your moles, too! 🌱 Moles are often misunderstood as garden pests, but did you know they’re actually hard at work beneath the surface? These small, powerful creatures can move up to 6 kilos of earth per hour, helping aerate the soil while feasting on snails and insects that could otherwise damage your plants. 🌸🌿 Instead of seeing molehills as a nuisance, try viewing them as signs of a healthy, active garden. 🏡 If the hills bother you, simply spread the soil a few hours after they appear to protect your grass without disrupting the mole’s work. If you prefer to move moles out of your garden gently, invite some neighborhood kids or friends with large dogs to play in the garden to create some ground vibrations. Confiscated tiger cubs are now at their forever home 🐯 Born in 2023 despite a ban on private tiger breeding, they were brought into this world illegally. When we first met them, they were scared, alone, and confined to a tiny room. Separated from their mother at a young age, tigers Snow and Sky lacked professional care until they were rescued and temporarily housed in a local zoo in Slovakia. The health care of these cubs is important especially since Snow is a white tiger – a trait that is often exploited for profit – which is usually the product of inbreeding and leads to the tiger often suffering from health issues related to these unethical breeding practices. To prepare them for their journey to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, the FOUR PAWS team arrived on site to complete necessary health checks. They were safely placed into specialised big cat transport crates and taken to Vienna Airport. ✈️ Now living their lives at our species-appropriate sanctuary! Which Brands Commit to Animal-Friendly Fashion? Now You Know from Our #WearItKind Directory! 🐾 Animal-progressive fashion brands The North Face, icebreaker, AllSaints, Columbia Sportswear Company, and Reformation use wool that is live lamb cut-free, and overall 54% of brands have made a timebound commitment to end their use of lamb cut wool. 🐑✂️🩸 The majority of brands (82%) have declared a ban of fur, however there are still some brands who haven’t made a public statement on this such as #Allbirds, #EddieBauer, #Lululemon, #OffWhite and #Reebok. Although most brands (63%) have taken some action on live plucking, and utilise certified supply chains, these certifications don’t robustly cover parent farms where there is a high risk of live plucking. Brands would need to take extra steps like Fjällräven and Patagonia do or opt for recycled and animal-free alternatives like Esprit, Napapijri, G-Star RAW, Everlane, Boden, and Closed GmbH have. 🪶 Overall to achieve animal welfare and environmental protection goals, we need more brands to make clear commitments to reduce their use of animal-derived materials (ADMs) such as pioneering brand Ganni A/S and SPELL. Ensuring good animal welfare is central to any socially responsible and ethical business. Changing lives for big cats in Slovakia! 🐯🇸🇰 Last month, we once again teamed up with veterinarians from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni) for yet another impactful veterinary mission! 🌟 This time, some of our experts, the veterinarians, and the Head of Animal and Facility Management of our FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary travelled to Slovakia, where we administered essential veterinary care to big cats in a private facility. 🏥🐅🦁 Although laws and regulations have changed in Slovakia, animals that were kept before that change are legal under a grandfather clause. In fact, all the animals we treated are kept legally. The owner of the facility voluntarily allowed us to come in and check the health of these majestic animals, and to neuter some of them, to reduce the possibility of illegal breeding. 🩺✨ While there, the team carried out veterinary health checks on seven tigers and administered important treatment, including the sterilization of five tigers. The team also worked on communicating with the owners to indicate areas of improvement with the goal of improving the conditions of these tigers. Additionally, they were able to take a close look at a lion temporarily being housed in the facility. 🦁 Not only, did this lion also receive necessary medical care, we are currently looking into the possibility of bringing him to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary! We remain hopeful that with our presence in Slovakia, private owners will see the benefits of preventing illegal breeding of more big cats in captivity and providing the remaining big cats with a more species-appropriate life. 🐾 #AnimalWelfare #FELIDABigCatSanctuary
