The UN Convention recognizes the cultural and spiritual significance of indigenous peoples' relationship with their lands. It emphasizes their rights of ownership, traditional land use, and participation in natural resource management. The text also highlights challenges faced by Indigenous communities, particularly in Zimbabwe, where rural communities can be evicted when valuable resources like minerals are discovered, exposing issues in community rights. Section 74 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe protects against arbitrary evictions and demolitions without a court order. However, Zimbabwe lacks comprehensive relocation and compensation guidelines, leaving communities vulnerable to mining projects. Recommendations include acknowledging indigenous peoples' existence, improving the implementation of decisions of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and recognizing communal land rights. It's important to conduct evictions and relocations in line with the law to prevent mining companies from taking advantage of vulnerable communities.

Social Protection and M&E in ASALs: Synergy for Effective Development
In arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), integrating social protection with monitoring & evaluation (M&E) is crucial. Social protection ensures vulnerable populations receive essential support during crises, while M&E tracks and assesses the effectiveness of these interventions.
For projects like Lake Turkana Wind Power, while there is no confirmed social protection component, integrating such measures with robust M&E systems could enhance socio-economic outcomes. This approach ensures equitable benefit distribution and strengthens community resilience.
Key Points:
#SocialProtection provides safety nets in ASALs, while #M&E assesses and improves these programs.
#LakeTurkanaWindPower could benefit from integrating social protection and M&E to maximize positive impacts on local communities.
#SustainableDevelopment and #EquitableBenefits are achievable by combining these strategies.

Situated in what we call the Vicuna belt, a copper-rich porphyry belt that straddles the Northern Argentinian border with Chile, Aldebaran Resources Inc. (TSX V.ALDE)’s majority owned Altar project hosts over 13bil pounds of copper and almost 4m oz gold already, a world class-sized copper/gold resource. Aldebaran’s massive copper endowment has received an interest from Australian copper producer South32, which has made two rounds of investments into Aldebaran since 2020. We see all the major economically viable deposits in this region as potential takeover targets, because the copper endowment is too big to disregard for a major producer.

September 30th serves as a reminder of the injustices endured by Indigenous peoples and the need for understanding, empathy, and unity in our journey towards reconciliation. Let us take this opportunity to listen, learn, and commit to a future built on respect, equality, and healing—a future where the voices and experiences of Indigenous communities are honored and valued.
Establishing strong and dependable relationships with Indigenous communities is essential for the prosperity of mineral exploration and development. Orix Geoscience Inc.’s commitment involves engagement, promoting constructive dialogue and advocacy to build and strengthen trust with these communities. We encourage all professionals and organizations in the exploration and mining industry to educate themselves and actively participate to this essential endeavor of reconciliation.

DUELLING RAIL PROJECTS HINT AT INTENSIFYING CONTEST FOR AFRICA'S CRITICAL MINERALS
This S&P Global Insights article highlights the intensifying global competition for control over the mineral-rich African Copperbelt, spanning Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
On one side, the Lobito Corridor has received commitments of over $1 billion from private companies, supported in part by a consortium backed by the US and EU. This ambitious project aims to link the northern regions of Zambia and southern DRC directly to Angola's Port of Lobito, optimizing the export of essential minerals like copper and cobalt. The revamped Lobito Corridor is expected to handle 4.98 million metric tons of freight annually by its 20th year, significantly enhancing export efficiency.
On the other side, China is concentrating its efforts on revitalizing the TAZARA railway, an eastern route leading to Tanzania's Dar es Salaam. Once renovated, the renovated TAZARA aims to restore its original capacity of 5 million metric tons of cargo per year.
The Lobito Corridor initiative is increasingly relevant in today's global context, where the demand for critical minerals for technologies and renewable energy solutions is surging. While China aims to maintain control, the US and EU-backed group seeks to develop an alternative export route through the Lobito Corridor.
These dueling initiatives by some of the wealthiest nations on the planet will benefit the Copperbelt region, which needs infrastructure investments to alleviate the logistical bottlenecks that have long hampered the region's mineral output. The Lobito Corridor is positioned to become a critical artery in the global supply chain of strategic resources.

Another mining giant coming to Zambia. With CoBold already on the ground, the future appears bright for the country.
As a country, we can only hope for Government to put in place necessary regulations that will ensure all aspects of the triple bottom line (social, economic, and environment) receive equal attention. Focussing on economic benefits, as is normally the case with African governments, always leads to exposure of the citizenry to dangers of environmental degradation and social insecurities.
Therefore, as we welcome such massive investments, we need to also request for detailed plans on aspects such as end-of-life practices, internal and external environmental management, supplier partnerships and Eco-innovativeness among others. Without focus on these and other green supply chain practices, we shall end up with a DEAD country. Already, the country has seen how some mining towns on the copperbelt have been left with massive dumps of mining waste rock as well as slags from smelting operations with absolutely no tangible plans on how to deal with them. All this has been because the initial planning did not take the end-of-life plans by the mining firms into consideration. We need to note this this is what has contributed to illegal mining activities by our youths, which has so far led to uncountable but avoidable premature deaths.
Further, with the changes in the the weather patterns, which has so far shown trends of poor rainfall patterns, we need to seriously plan for the little available water in our water bodies which are usually susceptible to contamination by mining activities. This will ensure protection of the ecosystem.
Finally, my wish is for Government to take advantage of such opportunities to demand that these mining giants put up their own power generation plants to avoid putting pressure on ZESCO, which is already clearly failing.
