It's Tuesday, so we're on part two of a five part series on the challenges that Main Street directors face in their daily work. Part 2 is about property owners. If your downtown has properties, you have property owners! What's your relationship with them? Do they live in your town? Are they hard to track down? How do you share information with them? We hear from Main Streets often that their relationship with the owners of local property is strained: Absent, non-committal, or at worst combative towards your causes as a Main Street org. Whether you have a property owner that is fully invested in your vision of your downtown, or one that's using their storefront as storage, your goal is to build a better relationship with them. What kind of information could you give property owners to build a better relationship? We have some ideas we're working on (stay tuned for Friday) but we want to hear from you as well. #mainstreet #knowledgebase #propertyownership

Understanding affordable housing solutions can be daunting, especially for those who have never faced housing stability issues. According to the San Antonio Report, the city is grappling with more than 95,000 cost-burdened households and a significant shortage of affordable homes. The SACRD team encourages you to educate yourself on San Antonio’s housing crisis and use your voice and expertise to advocate for policies that can improve the lives of our neighbors. We invite you to watch the "Everybody Needs a Home" documentary, which highlights the key intersections of the affordable housing crisis in San Antonio. https://lnkd.in/gz2gPRQN

This past week I sat down with our local newspaper reporter to discuss the city’s strategic planning process we’re currently undergoing. At the conclusion of the interview Bill asked what else would you like people to know, to which my response would be quoted and later shared to social media - “This is your city. This is your dollars going to work here and if you don’t have that input, if you don’t personally invest in something, the outcome’s never going to change,” Nordick said. “If you truly want the change in the city that you’re saying, then you need to come out and be a part of these things. Be a part of the strategic plan. Be a part of the budget. Be a part of everything that interests you. Take ownership of the city.” It was a call to action for the people as we had just had our second community input budget meeting with no attendance along with the attendance of the strategic planning sessions being lower than expected. My question to fellow colleagues is how have you been successful at getting people in the chairs for these meetings? #citymanagement

We work across the country, but it is lovely when you get a gig that is close to home - it can get quite tedious having the same argument with the M25! But it's especially nice when you get a job that has the purpose of improving the place where you live and where you work. We completed this job on behalf of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council back in 2021, but it's a great example of how local authorities, LEP's, BID's, etc (goodness there are some acronyms there to contend with!) can use video to highlight the benefits of any given area. If you work in the public sector, are a housing developer or have an interest in promoting a locality, talk to us. We've done a few of these so understand where the challenges and pitfalls lie so more time and budget can be spent on filming and editing instead of dealing with roadblocks (sometimes literally!)
