At any given time, you'll experience one feeling or the other: feeling like you have a "job", a "career", or a "craft". . . . Job - trading time for $$$. Feels purely transactional. Career - trading time for long-term fulfillment and livelihood. Craft - trading time for purpose and meaning. Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Throughout your professional journey, you'll experience all three. Some days, it'll feel like a job. Patient in, patient out. . .Some days, it'll feel like a career, with actual accomplishments and milestones. . . Long post ahead!! A year ago, I graduated with my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. At that time, I was juggling a full-time job, finishing my last quarter of classes, and completing my clinical hours with LGBTQ children and adolescents. When I decided to pursue licensure—which in California requires 3,000 hours—in a field with a critical shortage of therapists, I quickly realized how challenging it would be. Balancing a full-time job, managing substantial student loan debt, and working multiple jobs to cover rent and loan payments while doing my clinical hours felt overwhelming. Like many of my peers, I tried to balance full-time work and accruing clinical hours during lunch breaks and after work. However, I concluded that splitting my time wasn’t fair to my high-risk adolescent clients, as I couldn’t give them 100% of my attention and care. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. Joining Stride Funding has allowed me to support others pursuing clinical professions, helping them graduate with not only a job but also an employer committed to their future by reducing their student loan burden. Healthcare is something everyone will need at some point. This reality motivates me to make a meaningful impact. Working at Stride Funding and attending conferences like SHRM and Leap HR in recent months has reinforced my belief that we need innovative solutions to increase access to education for clinical careers. It's easy to get lost in the bad stuff, but how about we highlight some good stuff? (like transparency) ✅ Transparent about base salary for their role near Providence, RI ($73-82K base) ✅ Crazy-high student loan assistance (20K in the first 5 years...and they don't stop at 5 years) ✅ Up-front about bonuses that are totally achievable (eg 12 patients a day, not 20) ✅ Documentation and admin times are built in to your workweek (eg 40 hour workweeks, not 40 hours of patient care + 10+ hours of notes at home) ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ Home-buying assistance, relocation assistance, relicensure assistance, residency programs, con-ed...and a bunch more But, my favorite thing? 💵 THEY HAVE A SIDE HUSTLE PROGRAM, TOO. Meaning, if you do some of their certifications (which they cover), they'll pay you to teach others, too.
