Interesting article on many levels
Important update on South Island NRL Bid: “We certainly wouldn’t be looking at anything on the North Island, but if opportunities arose on the South Island, we would look at them.” "New Zealand is another area that could well be looking at an expansion team though it won’t be the heavily mooted Wellington with V’landys committing to leaving the North Island to the Warriors." “New Zealand is an important area for us" Great reporting Nick Tedeschi. #NRL #NRLW National Rugby League

Could the National Rugby League be missing a bigger opportunity in Melbourne this Weekend? With no AFL - Australian Football League Finals in Melbourne, the focus shifts to the NRL as the Melbourne Storm take on Cronulla Sharks at AAMI Park this Saturday! But is there more that could be done to maximise this unique opportunity in the heart of AFL territory? In Australia’s highly competitive sporting landscape, moments of clear air are rare and valuable. 46% of AFL fans in Victoria—around 1.65 million people—say they are also NRL fans, according to our data at Gemba. This weekend offers a chance to further engage Melbourne’s multi-sport fans, boost attendance, and strengthen the NRL’s presence for the future by capturing important fan data. It could be a moment for the NRL to build even more momentum in Melbourne and capitalise on the Storms success. If Storm win on Saturday they will likely play a home preliminary final on the AFL GF eve public holiday. This could set up a huge weekend for sport in Melbourne. #NRL #Fans #Sportsbusiness #Sportsmarketing 📸: courtesy of AAMI Park

I understand that World Rugby's supporters, players, coaches and pundits are happy and proud when their team wins. But is it not in the interest of these very people and the game itself, that poor and inconsistent officiating is recognised, improved and ultimately eradicated? Is winning a game of rugby really more important than ensuring that an equal contest and a fair result ensues by applying the officiating system and its processes the way it was designed and intended? How has this issue been so prominent in world rugby for the last decade without referees or the World Rugby Board being held accountable? Is it not obviously evident that it's ruining the sport?

Let’s Get Behind School Rugby Throughout the course of this week, the National Schools’ Rugby Sevens will see over 14,000 players in over 1000 teams compete in a variety of competitions. Some are here to win it, some aiming to progress further than before and others participating for the experience. Whilst Rugby is addressing legitimate challenges, it is also a game that continues to capture the imagination of large numbers. The era of compulsory rugby is long gone, and these children are participating because they love the game. It never was a sport for everyone, but continues to be one which enriches the lives of many, providing lifelong memories and friendships. There is something captivatingly attractive about Rugby, though its leaders are curiously reluctant to articulate its benefits more widely. Those of us who have been positively impacted by the game have to be more vocal in our support: the modern game is a niche experience, with unique benefits and challenges. But, those who love it, love it as much as they ever did. Let’s get behind school Rugby - and lifelong friendships

According to website Rugby365, the sale of Newlands Rugby Stadium - to an undisclosed buyer - was voted on, and approved, at a recent Western Province Rugby Football Union council meeting. Following the move of Western Province Rugby’s professional teams to DHL Stadium in early 2022, Newlands Rugby has ceased to be a rugby venue. When Western Province Rugby was placed under administration by SARU in October 2021, one of the major tasks assigned to the administrator was to finalise the sale of the stadium. One of the obstacles included a proposal to have the stadium declared a heritage site however, an independent report by a heritage specialist suggested otherwise. Given the current schism in New Zealand Rugby, Roger Mitchell's well-articulated recent article on #Rugby & talk of #Saudi money coming to create a Rugby version LIV Golf on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast (with Mark Foster), the storm clouds of #disruption seem imminent. For me, it comes down to the fact that when compared to other high-profile sports, elite Rugby players play too much, get absolutely battered week-in week-out for quite frankly relatively pitiful remuneration. No matter how much tinkering is done with rules, governance, player vs country contracts, concussion protocols, etc. this lack of money going to its stars leaves the sport more vulnerable than ever for someone to come along with a big cheque and mix things up a bit. The inevitability of this is almost palpable but the nuanced cause and effect, fragmentation and revolution it may cause is up for debate. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to a nice day out on Saturday attending European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR)'s showcase Championship Cup, final Stade Toulousain Rugby v Leinster Rugby at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, who knows I might have to go to #Riyadh to watch it next year! 😉 RugbyDAO World Rugby AYNE - are you not entertained? podcast Public Investment Fund (PIF)
