Looking to start an in-house career? Litigation is significantly different from internal roles. With Litigation, the focus is typically on gaining the upper hand. In-house, the focus is on business growth and closing deals as best as possible, while protecting your company’s interests. The switch from one to the other will not happen overnight but here are 4 tips to help you on your journey: 1. Stay open and don’t be afraid to start from scratch. That’s the best place to start, in my opinion. 2. Observe A LOT. Watch, learn and ask questions to understand processes. 3. Do the work and build your knowledge-base. 4. By all means, AVOID the comfort zone. Step up and ask for new responsibilities. That’s how to build your capacity. If you are getting to the point where you will compromise to get out of your current firm, it is a red flag that you should have left long ago. 🚩 Here is what this looked like with an associate I worked with not too long ago... 📞 First Call: I'm unhappy but don't think it's the right time. 📞 Second Call: I'm unhappy but don't think it's the right time. That said, I may consider leaving if my compensation stays the same or if they gave me an elevated title. 📞 Third Call: I'm unhappy and am strongly considering moving, I'm a little more open to firms that offer slightly less money if the culture is a good fit. 📞 Fourth Call: I'm unhappy and need to move ASAP. I am open to whoever will take me. Far too often, associates know they should move and tolerate whatever issue is happening until they get to a breaking point. Don't wait. What’s your favorite part about being in-house counsel? For me, it’s working with the business departments. Expanding who we work with daily besides only other attorneys (although the attorneys on my team are the BEST), is such a great benefit. I learn about the business and I learn about the people. Communications, Clinical Quality, Finance, Clinical Operations. The list is endless of the wonderful people and business departments I get to work with.
