Thinking about implementing a bit of a different twist to my business model and seeing how it shakes out... At my bar, we have a very very small space for making food. In Vermont you are able to buy pre-made food wholesale as long as its done in a certified home kitchen. So my solution is to instead of trying to make food on-site, we can wholesale from different local vendors to suit our needs and then retail the food to our customers who come to the bar. We have been trying this out with La Casa Empanada in West Brattleboro and my gosh has it been successful off the bat. We are selling 300% more than anticipated and it is bringing in new customers. What do you think? Have you seen this model elsewhere? What works about it? What might be a problem with it?

Day 5: The Insight Shop When I say the name, Burger King, what do you think? The last time I willingly went to BK was in 2001 when I was pregnant with my second child, I craved their chicken sandwiches, only theirs and nothing else would do. I have not been back since. Ellen Barbee reports, Jan 31, 2024 that Big changes are coming to Burger King, but will it be enough to help this franchisee? I think not, but you be the judge. Here is what they are planning to do to revitalize the brand. 1) Add a new Whopper to its menu 2) Adding a spicier take on its fish sandwich 3) Getting a new exterior design 4) The parent company of Burger King, Restaurant Brands will take over more of the franchise stores 5) Offering crowns for adults 6) Fixing their snafu's around croissant breakfast sandwiches, priced at $.01 or Whopper Wednesday. 7) Fixing app issues 8) Focusing on 'reclaiming the Flame initiative' Here is what they are leaving out, which I think is why, ultimately they will not be successful in claiming back their #2 spot from Wendy's. 1) The customer experience - most of the items above are focusing on product or the brand, not the experience 2) Understanding, from a CX experience, why they are the #3 burger brand franchisee and 'why' Wendy's took over - talk to customers that have left the brand over the last 10 years, 5 years, most recently and understand what would give them a reason to come back, I would be surprised if the reasons listed above are meaningful enough to grow sales significantly. 3) Why Burger King - Give consumers a meaningful reason to come back to the brand. What did they use to Love about BK (what made them want to stop), How will they differentiate from Mc D's and Wendy's (what is their unique value proposition), how does the 'new' experience of going to BK fit in with current fast foods needs? Who is up for some wings and things!!!! The chicken wing fast food sensation has taken off in the UK in the past few years. Wingstop very recently became the fastest-growing food franchise in the USA. They have come over here and while they are killing it, while others are doing a poor job in the same marketplace. The food produced between competitors is very similar. It is very cheap to make but Wingstop, even though a new name on the block in the UK is doing so well. They have got their brand down!!! Here are couple of simple tricks that they are using: > 1) Use of colour. They are using something that is distinct to them and something that they can own in the marketplace, while most competitors are stuck with red. Something that is well overused in connection with chicken > 2) Screens! Retail is all about screens now. They are a great advertising boards. They sell products, emotion, a sense of cool. They reinforce and bring the brand out When the look and feel of place is different and the brand is on point then it is easy to win in the marketplace. Everyone else just doesn't look that inviting, they feel basic and not well executed. You are not creating feelings!!! These are such easy steps in creating a retail experience but they often get missed or poorly executed, especially when you are just a smaller retailer. Trouble is if you look bad compared to your competitors the chances of winning in the marketplace become very low. In 1997, 57% picked Burger King fries over McDonald's... so what went wrong? 🍟 There are two types of people: those who think a great product sells itself and those who think good marketing can sell anything. But the truth is, you need both. Burger King learned this lesson the hard way. In December 1997, they introduced new fries, coated in starch to stay hotter and crunchier. After a successful small sample blind taste test showed 57% preferred these fries over McDonald's, Burger King launched a $70 million marketing campaign in January 1998, featuring Mr. Potato Head. People flocked to try the new fries. Sales soared. They sold 150 million more fries in the first six months compared to the previous year. But there was a problem. Burger King didn't properly test and train their franchises on how to cook the new fries. This led to the fries being too hard to cook in mass and a tasteless product. The product didn’t deliver. By 2001, Burger King had lost significant market share. This story highlights a critical lesson. A strong product and powerful marketing must go hand in hand.
