THERE'S SOO MANY DICKS! Seriously: did you know that men named Richard, Rick, or Dick (Dicks) outnumber women and diverse groups on public company boards? It's time to Change the Board Game. There are too many Dicks and not enough of everyone else. We combed through each board of directors of U.S. based companies on the NYSE and NASDAQ, all 36,957 existing board members across 4,429 publicly traded U.S. companies. The data is astounding: 🔍 There were 566 men named Richard, Rick, or Dick (Dicks) serving on these public company boards. 🔍 Black women and Asian women barely outnumber men named Dick, with only 806 Black Women, 774 Asian Women. 🔍 There were only 283 Hispanic Women on these same boards, only half the number of “Dicks”. Lindiwe Mazibuko of Futurelect, Tainah Pereira of Mulheres Negras Decidem (Black Women Decide), and Erin Vilardi of Vote Run Lead share three strategies for building the pipeline for new public leadership that is more representative of the society we live in: “Across our three organizations, we follow similar approaches to preparing leaders for public office: 1️⃣ We source leaders from different, too-often overlooked, places 2️⃣ We guide them through a process of self-examination and inquiry with expanded values and systems lenses 3️⃣ We equip them with the tools to drive transformative policies and to serve as the role models our communities deserve. This article delves into the unique qualities and challenges that shape the leadership journey of Black women. From navigating intersectional identities to redefining traditional leadership paradigms, our contributions are invaluable and often overlooked. Black women in leadership often face additional challenges regarding equality in work metrics (moving targets) and budgets (limiting resources). How does your organization keep discrimination and stereotyping out of teams? While transparency and radical honesty can help decrease bias when assigning projects, it may not be enough.
