This is definitely not my wheelhouse, but I know I have some connections on here that knew my dad out in Oak Ridge and were/are in construction management. In 2017, I embarked on my first internship in construction with Zachry Construction Corporation. It was an incredibly eye-opening and rewarding experience. From day one, I knew the opportunities would push me out of my comfort zone. I was 18 and a freshman attending Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) studying concrete industry management CIM MTSU. One of the first things I learned was the importance of teamwork. Construction projects are complex endeavors that require seamless collaboration between various teams and departments. Working with experienced professionals, I quickly grasped the significance of effective communication and coordination. The unity and purpose of the construction site were fascinating. I knew I had discovered my purpose and passion. Challenges were never in short supply during my internship, which made it so beneficial. Whether dealing with unexpected weather conditions, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, or solving logistical puzzles, every day presented a new set of hurdles. These challenges not only tested my problem-solving skills but also taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience in the construction industry. Reflecting on my experience with Zachry, I can confidently say that it provided invaluable lessons and experiences. Thank you, Zachry, for being a part of building me! WE ALL NEED THAT PUSH! Not stepping out of one's comfort zone can feel so easy many times. As sweet as it sounds, the convenience of doing the same thing over and over can be an hindrance to doing or learning new things. Looking back at when I started my #internship in February and comparing it to now, the internship has really been a period of learning a lot. Many things I didn't even know I was capable of doing - I did them and even became better at them. Thanks to the push from the tasks assigned to me. Permit me to say "I take new tasks with joy😊🤭"! There are a lot of beautiful things we discover we are capable of when we get of our comfort zone and focus on being better every time. IT'S CO-OP AND INTERN SEASON IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY! In the next few weeks, firms are onboarding young engineering, surveying, architecture, science, and construction management students. Let's help these students realize what great opportunities there are in the construction industry and let's help each other's students out. Students: Take advantage of your time in the office and field and learn all you can. Talk to people in your own company outside the group you are working in. On the site, ask questions of the construction manager and their team, and take the opportunity to learn from the many great tradespeople this industry has. Sometimes the best lesson you can take away from an internship is what you DON'T want to do. Don't feel bad about it, but don't burn your bridges. The construction industry, while large, is simultaneously small. A positive attitude can go a long way, and your team leader can often introduce you to someone who may be able to get you a job in an area you ARE interested in. But if you don't show up to learn and be the best you can, your team leader is unlikely to offer an introduction. Stories about bad attitudes in the field can spread like wildfire and quickly earn you a reputation (deserved or undeserved). Full-time team members: Reach out to your co-ops and interns and let them know you are open to questions. Mentor your co-ops and interns- these are the folks who will someday join your firm - or will join a competitor or client- your attitude matters! Reach out to your clients and volunteer to talk to their co-ops and interns if they are interested in your area of expertise. Ask your clients to speak to your co-ops if their ultimate career aspiration is something other than what is available at your firm, and help your students plan for their next internship with a company that better aligns with their goals. How did you get into the construction industry? I got into the construction industry at a young age. My parents were custom house builders so I was always around the building process and helping out where I could. It wasn’t until college that I knew I want to go into the transportation industry. Those classes at ASU were very interesting to me and eventually I got an internship with Pulice Construction, Inc. 2. What is something that you enjoy about the industry or about your position? My favorite thing about what we do is that everyday is different. There isn’t a single day that goes by that is identical. We are always trying to find solutions to problems or finding different ways to do activities more efficiently. 3. What advice would you give to someone interested in a career in construction?
